Keeping records

I have just updated my Excel spreadsheet and I couldn't help but wonder if I am going over the top on my record keeping for my firearms?

Currently I use GunSafe to keep track on the equipment for insurance purposes. I also keep a note in there of when I clean each of them. I also have scanned copies of recipts and pictures of each firearm. This includes holsters, sights etc.

My Excel spreadsheet has a worksheet for each firearm with information about when, where and how many rounds were run through the gun along with the type of ammunition that was used.

Am I collecting too much information?

Is there any information I should be collecting but am not?

Does any else collect the information for round shot? Is this over kill?

ps I haven't needed to count the number of BG shot yet, and truly hope never to have to.

Some people say OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) like it's a bad thing.

You keep whatever records you like.

If we can keep most any gun we want, it's harmless to keep whatever quality
of Excel spreadsheet floats your boat.

Kevin, apart from being a CHL holder, you are a gun enthusiast, which I consider a hobby. You are not only doing an excellent job of documenting your possessions, you are also having fun in doing it. If it brings you satisfaction, then you should do what you're doing....perhaps even more. Immersing yourself in your hobby is a virtue, not a vice.

I did the same thing years ago, but instead of record keeping of the gun cleaning timetable, etc I documented proof marks of all my guns. And I wrote a short narrative of those proof marks. That took on a life of its own. Learning what guns had what proof marks led to a sub-hobby of the hobby. Doing that gave me endless hours of enjoyment, and allowed me to become very knowledgeable in the guns I took an interest in. The history of a particular gun, its use and evolution, always fascinated me.

If you have fun doing it, then carry on keeping on, my man!

I'm not this bad in my personal life, but I am in my professional life. I keep track of sooo much stuff at work that sometimes I go through change what I keep track of every couple of years.

It's over the top for many and not for others. Whatever keeps you sane.

in all honesty , i applaud you for it .

some people do the same with car collecting , coin collecting , stamp collecting , ect.
guns are just way cooler than stamps .

And when you do go to the range, make sure you record it in your databease!

My wife tracks my range time on the spreadsheet in her brain......"Are you going out there AGAIN??? You've been there three times this month already, four times last month, and you went on my birthday and our anniversary !!!!"

I have to say that this thread brought back memories of when I was a target archer over in Blighty. I was shooting in the bow (recurve) one Saturday (as was usual before a Sunday competition) and was happily sending arrows into a nice group at 80yards. At the other end of the shooting line one of the elderly club members was shooting even slower than usual. Being a master bowman and an all around 'decent chap' I ventured over to see what was going on and to offer any help if needed. It turns out he was making a note of the sight settings (windage and height) after every arrow! I wouldn't have cared so much but the guy was adjusting his sight after every darn arrow to compensate for the last one. Talk about a recipe for disaster. Now I could argue that this is all fine and dandy if he could actually shoot groups in the first place but some of the arrows he was shooting were more liable to end up in the grass than in the target.

Still he was having fun I guess. I was impressed he could even see the darn arrows at 80 yards, even with a scope...especially the ones in the grass!!

Kevin....your way over the top!! Just kidding. If it makes you happy and makes sense....do it! There are some things in life and my job that are absolutely 100% perfect and have to be. Others....who cares. If it matters to you then one day you will have very detailed statistical data that you can make assumptions/adjustments from. Knowledge is power.

IMHO of course.

My range time goes like this......"Is that all the ammo I brought?!", "Am I out already?!", "I went through how many rounds!", and the prevailing one "My wife's gonna kill me...!"
