Leave your knife in the car at kid's school?

Okay - maybe this is a stupid question... I pick my son up from Kindergarten after work. Before I get out of the car, I remove my firearm and place it in the glove box. Should I also remove my pocket knife? I assume so, but wanted to make sure.

I don't have an official answer, so, as to your dilemma, I guess I don't have a useful answer, but I have never even considered leaving my pocketknife behind.

I've never had to go into a school that had a metal detector; I suppose that might change things, if that's a factor for you.

Think it depends on the type of knife and if it is hanging on a clip in your pocket or just a small pocket knife down in your pocket. Also, depends on the school rules and if they have a metal detector, as JCole mentioned.

I personally have never taken my 3 - 4 inch blade knives out of my pocket when attending any school function.

If you look at PC §46.03, it is an offense to carry a firearm, illegal knife, club, or prohibited weapon in a school. Illegal knife is defined in PC §46.01. An ordinary pocket knife with a blade shorter than 5.5 inches is legal.

I don't know of any other section of law that makes it an offense to carry a knife in a school. You could search the education code.

Prohibited weapon means things like bombs, machine guns, brass knuckles, and zip guns, defined in PC §46.05.

It's a bit silly to put them into 46.03, as they are already prohibited everywhere.

I have a folding knife with a 3.5" blade about half of which is serrated. It is hanging inside my pocket on a clip and I've never even thought about removing it before entering my daughter's school. No one has asked about it if they've noticed. I may have even pulled it out to cut something before in the classroom.

It is amazing to me the number of folks who translate, "over five and one-half inches" in to "shorter than 5.5 inches " for illegal to legal when legal really equals
5.5 or less. (nitpickin cause so many of my legal knives are 5.5 :) )
