Carry Combinations...

Post by Stephen A. Camp »

Hello. When I was a uniformed police officer, I tried always to carry a BUG secreted away should my duty pistol be taken, run dry, etc. For several years, the BUG was a Kahr K9, but I just never could "warm up" to it. I tried a Glock 26 as well, but the one that backed up my Hi Power more than any other was the simple S&W J-frame .38 Special. Partially supported by the top of my duty boots and carried in an ankle rig, it was easy enough to forget that it was even there. In colder months, it sometimes rode in my left-side uniform jacket pocket.

For several years, this was my usual handgun carry combination for work.

This Glock 26 rode many a mile with me, but it was just never comfortable enough. Intellectually, it makes more sense than the 5-shot .38 Special, but in the end simple preference won out over intellect. I think that at least some of the time this happens to more than a few of us.

These days I sometimes find myself carrying the Ruger SP101 loaded with .357 magnum Corbon 125-gr. DPX, backed up by a well-used S&W Model 642 loaded with Remington 158-gr. LSWCHP +P. The same speed loader works with either revolver, but necessitates being loaded with the .38 Special load.

How about you? For those who sometimes tote more than one, what combinations have you come to prefer?

Best.

Excellent choices. I made the switch to 1911 several yr ago when I started carrying 24-7. I still love the feel of a 101. ;-)

What speedloader / speedstrips do you carry and why?

Post by BTin »

Mr. Camp,

Thank you for all of your articles. Your input is one of the major reasons I just bought a 642.

Most of the time, I carry a hi-power, but I wanted to get a 642 for times when that isn't easy.

I will be carrying the 642 while bicycling, running, working in the yard, and other times when I won't be far from the house, or afraid of sweating on my hi-power.

So what speedloader / speedstrips do you carry, and why? Also, how do you carry the speedloader? In a holster, or pocket? And if pocket, which pocket?

Thanks in advance.

I carry my Hi Power IWB, and have a Kel-Tec P-3AT loaded with Corbon DPX in my front left pocket. Not being entirely comfortable with the .380 caliber, even in DPX, I have purchased a Colt aluminum-frame six-shot snubby in .38 S&W to be the "primary BUG," if that makes sense. (I originally bought a S&W Airweight for this, but my wife now owns that  ) But, the P-3AT is just so dang handy and concealable, I will keep it close for the rare occasion when the others are too bulky. Heck, it is so small and light I might even just put it in a pocket somewhere as a "secondary" BUG.

Would love to carry the snubby in a ankle rig at boot top, but concerned about the dirt factor. I live in the sticks, lots of sand here, I fight brushfires regularly as a vollie firefighter, just afraid the gun would load up with too much dirt too fast. Guess I should just try it out and see for sure.

elb

p.s. If anyone wants to know what to get me for Christmas, would love to find a Rohrbaugh 9mm in my stocking...

Hello. I carry an HKS speed loader in the pocket and have Bianchi speed strips in a carrier on my belt. This is a relatively flat affair and covers with my shirt.

I generally carry a Hipower in a Hume JIT belt slide with either my 9 mm J Frame or a Kel tec P 11 in my opposite pocket. I have tried the Glock 26 but generally it is too big for pocket carry. Occasionally when I want something small, I carry either a Colt .25 or a Seacamp .32.
