Springfield 9mm XD
A friend is interested in an XD. He was telling me that there is no thumb safety, and that's a problem for him.
I thought there was. I qualified for my CHL on the XD a few years ago, and thought I remember a thumb safety. Have they changed, or have they always not had a thumb safety?

Re: Springfield 9mm XD
No thumb safety. It is a striker fire platform just like the Gs. I think some of the new XDMs have added one. (Correct me if I am wrong here guys & gals.)
Dont worry. There has never been a thumb safety on a revolver. No one has ever had a problem w/ that. The striker fire platform is a safe gun & the one I recomend when new shooters give me the impression they are going to have a handgun but only shoot it every yr when the family comes in for Christmas & then clean it before they go for next renewal, aaaahh or maybe someday 'cause I ony shot it 11 times last Christmas.
Son & son in law both have one & they like theirs. I have shot them I like them.
Son is an experienced shooter & firearms instructor for Blackwater.
Son in law is a teacher & shoots 3-4 times a yr (when son & Grandkids are down for Thanksgiving & Christmas
)
That is a wide gap, son is not under armed, son in law is not carrying a gun he has to worry about being too complicated or unsafe.
Bottom line is that is a GOOD choice.
My .02cents & some think it worth about half that.

Re: Springfield 9mm XD
I have a LNIB .45 XD Service model with 4" barrel and the gear-up promo kit that I'd like to sell. My Service model DOES have a thumb safety. It's my understanding that this is the only model XD with a thumb safety. I'd feel better if my XD 9SC had a thumb safety.

Re: Springfield 9mm XD
As I understand the way Springfield does things is that these thumb safeties are available on the .45 XDs if you order from them and want it. The only one I could find was a .45 cal. http://www.springfield-armory.com/xd.php?version=136" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but didn't look very hard. I would say to look around the site more and contact them by phone or e-mail. They will be able to tell you if it is available for a 9mm and what your friend needs to do.

You can get the XD with a thumb safety in 45 ACP in the 4 inch service or 5 inch tactical models. They do not offer it in any other calibers or the 3 inch sub-compact model. I can't find that they have it on any of the XDm offerings.
It's a fantastic pistol (yes I'm biased).

No, no XDMs have thumb safetys, not even an option. Only an option on the XD.
As stated, only on a 4" XD.45 or 5" XD.45.
Go here, then click "Download Catalog" then go to pages 17-20 of the catalog.

My goodness, did I start all this.
I just know my 1911s have one.
And my revolvers dont.

Re: Springfield 9mm XD
Don't forget that the XD also has a grip safety just like the 1911. Hope this helps.
Re: Springfield 9mm XD
If the issue of a thumb safety is a deal breaker for the XD then maybe your friend should look at the M&P several of the M&P models have thumb safeties.
I own both guns and the absence of a thumb safety on either platform is no big deal to me.
In his initial design of the 1911 pistol John Browning only had the grip safety the thumb safety was added at the insistence of the Army.

I think the FN P9mm has a thumb safety, but I don't know much about it. You can also look at H&K, Beretta, and Ruger among other pistol types.
Re: Springfield 9mm XD
Someone told me yesterday that all new XDs (and XDMs) have a thumb safety, but I don't see it. I see a disassembly lever and a slide lock, but no thumb safety.Venus Pax wrote:A friend is interested in an XD. He was telling me that there is no thumb safety, and that's a problem for him.

It is, however, a perfectly safe pistol. I have one. I too wish it had a thumb safety, but that didn't keep me from buying one. Taurus semi-autos have a thumb safety, and they appear to be generally well-received. Their new PT709 is very nice.
Took class, paid fees, changed my mind. I want constitutional carry.

There is a thumb safety on this model of the .45 caliber XD.

As I mentioned earlier the M&P has thumb safeties on models of thier full size and compact pistols in 9mm, 357, 40, and 45

Re: Springfield 9mm XD
About 2 years ago the US army was thinking about getting a new handgun. The requirements where 45 ACP, 4” barrel (I think) and a thumb safety. All interested parties including Springfield quickly developed 45 ACP variants with thumb safeties. Before any testing the Army dropped the plan and is sticking with the M9. I think some parts of the military are still considering going to a 45. But that is why most manufacturers now have a 45 with a thumb safety variant.

Re: Springfield 9mm XD
May I suggest contacting Springfield directly via their website> I had a question on their guns awhile back and they responded very quickly.
I'm sure they would be glad to help.
