AK question

I just got a new WASR and have a quick question. On the left side opposite the charging lever is some kind of bracket. It is about 4 1/2 inches long and the long edges are machined in a dovetail as if to hold something in place. What the heck is it for? I can't post a picture right now but will try to soon.

Of course, any manual I can find does not address this.
