PTSD = Deny of App.?

I have applied for my CHL by mailing out my packet this past week, and I have been pretty excited until last night when I got to thinking that my application would be denied because I have PTSD from combat related issues. Does anyone know if a V.A. diagnoses of PTSD would get me (or anybody) denied?

First of all, thank you for your service to the country.

In my few years of watching this forum, I have not heard of a PTSD diagnosis being a disqualifier. It seems only involuntary committment or a judicial finding of mental incompetence is.

The handbook is a little vague for specific diagnoses but clear on what could push a person out of the running: something that causes "substantial impairment of judgment, mood, perception, impulse control, or intellectual ability."

PTSD can cause these symptoms. A person could show the above signs related to PTSD at one time but be currently free of symptoms.

If it comes up in the processing you might need a new assessment to determine if you are free of these symptoms. What's important is not so much an old diagnosis but the current level of functioning.

I know many Veterans with PTSD diagnosed by the VA who have held Texas CHL's for a number of years..... no problem with application, issue, or renewal. It's been a topic of great discussion on VA discussion boards ever since our current administration took office.

The official way that the state looks at it is if there has been a ruling by a judicial authority. VA doctors do not qualify as a judicual authority. There is one glaring exception.... if you have ever been committed to a VA mental facility because of the PTSD.

Thats really good to hear. I have never been hospitalized for any mental condition so I should have nothing to worry about . Thanks for the info.
