Man Accidentally Shoots Self At DISD School Reporting
Steve Mauldin DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Click to enlarge1 of 1

A 52-year-old Dallas ISD employee is hospitalized in critical condition after he accidentally shot himself while on campus, district officials say.

The man, who works in the district's heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) unit, was at Umphree Lee Elementary School in the Redbird area of southern Dallas on Monday morning.

Monday is his day off. But we're told the man, whose name has not yet been released, was at the school as a volunteer and to visit two of his grandchildren who attend the school.

School officials say at about 8 o'clock Monday morning the man was talking to a friend in the school's custodial office. He apparently leaned out of the office door and pressed up against the door frame. When he did, officials say, a pistol in his pants discharged.

The bullet is thought to have struck the man in the leg. Paramedics took him to the hospital.

The school day had just begun and there were students in the building. It's not known if any students were in the immediate vicinity of the shooting.

Laquecia Smith was enrolling her two daughters at the school when the shooting happened. She says she heard a loud pop and knew it was a gunshot. She says people inside the school panicked, and staff members tried to get the students away from the scene and help the injured man.

The man could face criminal charges for bringing the gun onto campus, which is a third-degree felony. District officials say they don't know why the man would have brought a gun to the school.

No one else was hurt in the shooting.

Unfortunately, I will bet a dollar to a donut this guy had a CHL and didn't want to disarm. If this is the case, hopefully the news will not pick up on it. :banghead:

You'd better believe that if he has a CHL the media will pick up on it and he will soon be someone who HAD a CHL.

I'm hoping that he did not have a CHL and and and, that's all. I'd like to think that a CHL wouldn't have been that dumb.

attempt at positive spin ...

Man carried gun into a school and worst case scenario happens - it "accidentally" discharges.

No children, teachers, staff injured (except this moron).

Not likely to sway too many opinions, especially if he had a CHL ....

I'd sure like to know what kind of gun it was.
I cannot imagine how any handgun I know of could discharge from rubbing against a doorframe.

A pistol just going off by itself usually doesn't happen, unless your name is Plaxico, in which case it is possible. We will probably find out he was showing the gun off to his friend or horsing around when it discharged.

I'll take Keith's bet and say that with all the drilling and emphasis on off-limits status of school property, the guy would have to be a total moron to have taken a concealed handgun to a school where he worked.

Ok, after thinking about it for a couple of minutes, maybe this is not such a smart bet. It's pretty clear that he wasn't gifted with the intelligence of most of the students at the school but there are some parts of Dallas that it's simply customary (and at times required) to be armed, CHL or no. This guy may have been street smart but not wise to the rules of law regarding firearms and institutions of learning. Hence my leaning toward his not being a CHL - just too risky and not a risk an informed and responsible individual would take.

I think the poor soul is in a heap of trouble either way.

I think my bet is safe, as either way I am not out more than a dollar. ;-)

I do hope that he DOESN'T have a CHL. Either way he gets charged, but at least without the CHL he doesn't give us another black eye. :thumbs2:

Hmmm, this is where I went to elementary school, a LONG time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

I would bet that it was more a case of the "street smarts" and carrying, as opposed to a trained
CHL holder.

I don't see anything in the article that would indicate that. Can you point to a specific statement?
