French Police Ammunition

Post by casingpoint »

Would a French Police detective in Paris be using hollow point 9mm ammo, or ball this day and time? In the movie "Taken" starring Liam Neeson, Hollywood had a French detective stoking his house gun with roundnose. And, of course, all those 9mm shots throughout the show resulted in immediate stops, usually from instant death. Nice silver gray PX4 Storm near the end. Nice little flick for Sat night at the house, but certainly not Neeson's best work. Far from it.

Speer Gold Dot (hollowpoints) according to this press release:

Despite the French jokes, European police are dealing with increasingly violent Eastern European gangs.

I wouldn't look for anything technical to make sense in a fictional movie or TV show. I suspect the writers do not have clue #1; and even if they did, the director and actors would screw things up. I'm talking about firearms, explosives, motor vehicles, airplanes, electronics, etc., etc.

How many times have you seen computers explode because they "thought too hard"?

I used to think as Liam Neeson as one of the best actors currently working. He must be struggling to pay the rent.

That was the story line. A gang from one town in Albania kidnapping and enslaving as young tourist girls arriving in France or Orly. Perphaps not far from the truth.

Do you mean the story line of the movie?

There is a "white slave" trade in Europe, but it is operated more subtly than that. Agents in places like Russia and Bulgaria find girls or women who are out of work and promise them jobs in Western Europe. When the victims arrive, they are confined to bordellos and told that they have to work off their transportation and living expenses, which will never happen. The victims are told that if they resist or try to escape, their families back home will be attacked in retaliation.

It's a very ugly business. I hope those American-made Gold Dots find their targets and save the local taxpayers from maintaining criminals in prison for decades.

However, there are always new, eager entrants in such markets, as they say in MBA school.

BTW, quite a few young Russians work in the tourist business on Galveston Island. They always seem to appreciate my meager attempts to say Здравствуйте and До Свидания (which are about 1/3 of my Russian vocabulary these days).

I shared an office with a Russian immigrant for years. He taught me quite a bit, but one forgets for lack of practice.

I saw this firs-hand in the UAE recently. Girls from various countries (especially former Soviet Union countries and the Phillipines) are brought to the UAE to work in the hospitality industry with good pay (more than they could dream of in their home country) and once they arrive, they find out what 'hospitality industry" means to them. They arrive on contract (normally two years), their passports are taken, and they have to work off all expenses. They have no choice but to report to clients at hotels or other places as dictated by their bosses on a 7/24 basis.

It's a sad commentary on what humans are still doing to other humans:
slavery has never died, it has simply moved underground, sometimes in
Beverly Hills, California or other rich areas.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I did try to answer the original question. ;-)

Coerced prostitution and domestic and sweatshop labor goes on all over, including the U.S. The waitress or cook in a Chinese restaurant in your neighborhood could well be in that kind of situation.

These crimes are successfully prosecuted several hundred times a year in the U.S., but the term slavery usually is not invoked. The prosecutions are based on immigration paperwork fraud, failure to pay taxes, solicitation of underage prostitution, and that sort of crime.

From that ATK webpage:
French authorities spent two years developing their ammunition specifications
I'd sure like to see those.
