The above link is to the latest issue of American Handgunner magazine's website and is Mr.
Massad Ayoob's account of an actual shooting incident on a US Air Force base in Washington State.
The article may be a little small to read. You have to page ahead from the initial page of the link,
which is page 34, to page 87 to finish the story.
Here's the recap: In 1994 a deranged recruit, 20 years old, bought a MAK-90 (AK-47 clone) with a
75 round drum, brought it on base to the hospital and started shooting people. He shot 27 people,
5 of whom died. One of the dead was an 8 year old girl.
The responding LEO was a 24 year old Air Force SP (Security Policeman) on bicycle patrol. He carried
a Beretta M9, charged with 124 grain FMJ, Nato-compliant ammo. His usual M9, that he was used to shooting,
had gone to maintenance for some kind of checkup. The M9 he carried that day had not been shot by him.
This LEO was a conscientious officer and had bought a Taurus PT-92 (an M9 clone) as his personal weapon,
so that he could train with it during his off time.
The LEO rode his bike to the shooter's area and engaged him from what the LEO thought was 30 yards.
Later investigation showed that the LEO and the BG were actually 69 to 71 yards from one another.
The LEO's first 3 shots did not stop the madman. 2 were misses, 1 hit the BG near his armpit and passed
through his body. The 4th shot hit the BG between the eyes, travelled downward, and exited near the base
of his skull, rendering him DRT.
It was great shooting from a distance that many would consider suicide against an assault rifle.
Although the BG was shooting at the LEO, the LEO was not hit by any of the rounds.
When the dead guy's MAK-90 was examined, it still contained 19 rounds. He had expended 56 rounds in
the course of shooting 27 people and engaging the LEO also.

Range estimation is a good skill to have. The LEO rode his bike to the shooter's area and engaged him from what the LEO thought was 30 yards.
Later investigation showed that the LEO and the BG were actually 69 to 71 yards from one another.
Impressive shooting though. I can make 60 yard shots consistently with a 7.5" Blackhawk on a calm range with a field expedient rest, but I doubt I'd get two out of four hits, much less a headshot with my PT-99 offhand. Certainly not while ducking return fire.

See, now that's why military bases should be gun-free zones, then things like that wouldn't happen!

YES! Only bad guys should be allowed to carry dangerous weapons onto military bases.
