I just noticed that Cabelas has one of these for $99.99, and I happen to have a hundred dollar gift card. Now granted, it was one of those doorbusters things, but regular retail is $149. Still not bad.
Now part of me keeps saying, "Coincidence? I think not.". However, the other part of me points out that I have little need for a .22, possibly no actual need. I'm limited right now to public ranges, too...and the riflesos a different experience there, though I'm not sayin good or bad.
Anyway. Anybody have experience with one of these? Do you like it? Reliability, etc?
Thanks for any input.

Re: Marlin 795
I have read some pretty positive reviews on these. Good bang for the buck. I just bought a couple for my boys. Marlin has a $20 rebate through the end of the year, so make sure you pick one up if you buy the gun. Best of luck.
Re: Marlin 795
I have a 795S (stainless version). I noticed that the blued 795 they had on sale (for $109) at Academy did not have a hood over the front sight or the bright orange sight like my S but other than that it appeared identical, almost bought one for my daughter.
I like my 795S quite a bit. The only problem I have ever had is failure to lock the bolt open on the last shot, which I guess is probably the recoil spring is too stiff. I figured it'd improve with a little fluff & buff and breakin but it didn't really get much better. Works better with hotter ammo (the "550 round" value pack at Wal Mart is 100% not hot enough to lock the bolt back, the Federal blue-box value pack 40gr target load is hotter and is more like 70% failure to lock the bolt back). The downside to this failure is if you don't count rounds (like my kids...) then you may dry-fire it on an empty chamber, which I have heard is not good for rimfire rifles but I'm probably 2K rounds into mine and have not had any failure to fire ever.
Maybe when I crack it open to clean next time, I might cut down the recoil spring a little bit and see if it will improve the ability to lock the bolt open.
Anyway, the rifle is very accurate and besides the noted problem, very reliable. I think the Mossberg 702 Plinkster is the same design besides a different shaped stock and lacking the bolt release and probably lacks the LSHO as well, but used to be a little cheaper. Besides the magazine difference (box vs. tube) and a shorter barrel, the 795 is the same as a model 60, which is of course a classic, tried-and-true design. Marlin model 60 is arguably the most reliable, consistent and refined semi-automatic .22LR rifle ever made.

Re: Marlin 795
I have a Marlin model 60 I got from an older Veteran who was cleaning out some junk. I have not fired it, but I stripped it down and cleaned it. Everything seems to work nice, when I am able to shoot it I will post a RR.

Referencing only as its a .22 focused site. the accuracy of the Marlin by the shooter (who admittedly has a scope as big as the rifle
is amazing.

I have one I just procured at an Academy sale two weeks ago. I like the rifle (just having problems sighting in the scope but I blame the operator
). The rifle itself is quite choice. Light with good feel when firing. I have to resist the urge to "go Rambo" because of the nonexistent kick.
Also, you get extra clips at cheaperthandirt.com I am sure other places have it, but surprisingly enough I could not find them at the Marlin site itself.
