The biggest one to remember is there is safety in numbers. Try getting gas or visiting stores that are heavily used so there are others around. Being the lone person out there is placing yourself as a target. Crooks don't like crowds.
Make sure the places you go are well lit and have good visibility to see any dangers that might be approaching from a distance so you have more time to react and prepare. If you visually engage someone who is sizing you up before they catch you by surprise, the BG will usually move on to an unsuspecting victim.
Don't pull wallets or purses out in plain view. Remove your debit/credit card and have it only in your hand. That will keep them from trying a snatch and run.
Make sure to keep other than the drivers door locked when at the pump. That prevents someone from getting in the passenger side or driving up, opening the passenger door and grabbing items inside. If your filler tube is on the drivers side, stand between the hose and the drivers door. If you see someone approaching you can quickly get in the car and lock the door. If it is on passenger side, lock the doors and keep the remote handy. You can quickly unlock the passenger doors, jump in and re-lock with the remote. The BG will either move on or it will give you extra time to respond to the threat if they continue to try and gain entry to the vehicle.
There are a lot of others, so think about your surroundings at all times and how you can escape. Flight is better than fight. Situational awareness is key to staying safe and alive.
