Shooting Matches Etc.

I've just recently received my CHL, and am interested in getting more proper training. At the moment, I can't afford any of the big, expensive courses offered around the country, but am beginning to become interested in the IPSC competitions, just to shoot while under some stress.

Have you all found that they are good training sessions? What kind of weapon do you need to carry? I've only got my .45 Ultra Carry, and it is pretty much stock. Would I need to get a tricked out fancy target gun, or could I get by with this?

Throw some advice, ideas, etc my way, as I don't know the first place to start! Thanks!

Don't forget about IDPA....it is absolutely the most fun I have ever had. I am new to this training/sport and find that everyone welcomes a newcomer with open arms. IDPA is not an equipment race as I have heard some of the action shooting sports are. Guns are fine straight out of the box, you do not need a race gun, nor are they allowed. You need a holster and a mag holder. These do not have to be expensive purchases. It is a great experience!

Congratulations on your CHL, hope you never have to use it. I canâ€™t talk very much about IPSC, only watched a few matchesâ€™ looks like fun. Iâ€™m sure others will tell you all about what you need.

Mr D, your stock carry weapon is quit sufficient. Many, MANY, of us here compete in our street rig. I even start from cover & wear the clothes I wear on the street. You will never score as high as the ones that have the tuned guns & high dollar competition holsters. Those guys will never conceal those on the street. This practice will develop muscle memory that will take over if you ever need it.
Bottom line is what you are out there for. Training incase you need it or competition and beat the clock. In either case all trigger time is valuable.

Do any of you compete in USPSA? My local club (Texarkana Gun Club) is a USPSA affiliate, but I've never competed.

There's just something about dragging my butt out of bed on a Saturday morning...

I am up at 3:00 AM before a match on Saturday morning. I can't sleep from excitement and anticipation!

I really need to meet some people in Lubbock that are shooters as well. I guess that this would be as good a way as any.

Yeah, that's what I'm looking for, a place to get some "real world" experience, without having to get in a gunfight! :)

I'm glad that I won't need to buy a new pistol, as the one that I have cost enough! It sure isn't a "race gun" either. Ha. I'm also not concerned (yet) about getting the highest score.

I work 4-midnight, so I'm usually just getting to sleep at 3 a.m.
