Question about Sig 239 SAS

Post by wgoforth »

I am seriously considering a Sig 239 SAS... I will basically have to order one, so I'm at a disadvantage obviously.
There are 2 generations of these. Anyone handled/shot both? pros and cons?
The new gen has a short trigger and no longer offering the DAK trigger. Is this worth getting the 1st gen for?
New ones have double strike capability, which means a de-cocker on them. Some of the first gen had no de-cocker but came with a beautiful wood grip and the slide release was recessed into the wood. Does the presence of the extra control (decocker) get in the way of a smooth draw?

I love my various Taurus's, but I'm wanting one higher end gun, and from what I have read, this would fit the bill. So, I'm awaiting my forum friends with experience on this.

Thanks!

Have you shot any 239's before? I've got the standard DA/SA version and it is a great gun and very accurate. A few things to note if you haven't actually shot one yet.

- It is a bit top heavy compared to some of the other Sigs, and it is made more noticeable because of the short grip.

- If you are considering getting one of the models with wood grips, find somewhere to handle it first. They are extremely thick.

- Get one with night sights. The standard sights are kind of annoying.

- Check out the 229's as well. When you have them in hand the 229 feels a lot bigger, but if you compare them side by side, they really aren't that much different. The 239 is pretty big for a single stack, but the added size and weight (in my opinion) make it easier to shoot. My wife's Walther PPS in 9mm has a lot more felt recoil than my 239 in .40.

Hopefully some of that is helpful.

Thanks. No, haven't had the opportunity to handle any.
Is the 229 not double stacked? I assumed with the 13 rounds it would be. If so, sounds harder to CC.
In looking online, not much (if any) diff in the price. Are there any advantages to the 229 over the 239 for CC purposes? I have 2 fine home defense guns with 18 round mags. I have been carrying the LCP and 709 for personal defense. Wanting to go with a quality INB carry.

Can anyone think of some other 9mm I should give consideration to?

Yes, the 229 is a double stack. The only real size difference between the two pistols is that the 229's grip is slightly wider (however, if you put wood grips on the 239, it will be wider than the 229 with stock grips) and a little bit longer. Here's some incredibly blurry pictures I just took to demonstrate.

I would probably pick the 229 over a 239 with wood grips, and the 239 if both are stock plastic. The wood grips are really big, it's hard to overstate that. If you have a gunshow or anything near you where you could go fiddle with them it'd probably help you to figure out which you prefer.

If you want a small singlestack in 9mm you might check out the Walther PPS. It is ridiculously slim and has a number of different backstraps available to fit various hand sizes.

Hey friend, thanks a lot for going to that trouble for me. I have the Taurus SLIM and it is VERY slim, I don't know if you have fondled one or not. I do have the FEG PA 63, a Walther PPK knock off. I will keep an eye out for the 229 as well as the 239. Appreciate your telling me. The only Sig I have right now is the Mosquito for the kids, so hardly counts as a Sig, lol.

There have been two different P239s come across the for sale section recently.

I have a P239 .40 cal DA/SA, basic black with plain grips, and it's just right for my short chunky fingers. I tend to stick to the single stack handguns anyway, due to being "digitally challenged", and the wood grips on the P239 would be just too much for me. I like the 239 for the short grip length which makes it very good (for me) for CC. The fact that's the Sigs are excellent quality, and great shooters is a plus too.

All 4 of my sigs have been DA/SA. Although I have always wanted a DAK. They have a very smooth consistent pull. I believe it is around 6lbs? I have dry fired a few and liked it has an alternative to the traditional style ESPECIALLY for a carry gun. You have to train properly for the DA pull first then SA pulls thereafter on the classic design. It all boils down to preference and what you need it for. TRUE the 229 isn't much bigger at all. Might want to look into a DAK 229. I'd probably get the DAK if I were you. My dad has a P239 DA/SA and he won't part with it. But he also has a P228. :biggrinjester:

wgoforth,

I have a P229 40cal and I have no problems concealing it, the 229 is a great gun if your in the market for a sig I would strongly recommend that you give this one a good look at. You might try renting one from a range to see how you like it.

Hey HH! Maybe postman may bring you a goodie tomorrow? <g> :anamatedbanana
Thanks, unfortunatly there are no ranges here other than some very crude outdoor ones. May have to wait until a gun show sometime to fondle one.
Thanks!
