Best Buget 22LR Bolt Action Rifle

Post by drjoker »

Here are some rifles that I'm considering. Feel free to make suggestions but please tell me why you suggest what you suggest so that your suggestion can help me and others reading this forum (thanks). If you are quoting accuracy figures, please tell me at what distance you attained that nice tight grouping.

I would like to put a scope on it sometimes and use the iron sights at other times. I want a gun that can easily accept a scope, preferably with no expensive gunsmithing. This gun will be used for small game hunting. Gun should be accurate and safe out of the box, no gunsmithing.

Which one should I get? Here are my considerations;

CZ 452 Ultra Lux
Pros; internet chatter seem to suggest that this is the most accurate new rifle you can buy, regardless of price. Some claim 1 inch groups at 100 yards with iron sights due to ultra long barrel and ultra long sight radius. 28.5 inch barrel. A 0.5 MOA gun.
Cons; new price is a bit steep at $400, but I may find a used bargain....

Mossberg 46b or 46m
Pros; internet chatter seem to suggest that this is the most accurate used rilfe that you can buy, regardless of price. The price is $100-200. A sub-1 MOA gun.
Cons; they were last produced half a century ago, so finding one that is in good condition may be tough. It shoots just about any ammo accurately.

Marlin 981T, price $300.
Pros; tube fed so there is no magazine so you could locate your support hand closer to your body for easier accurate shooting from a standing position (support elbow on body to allow skeleton to support gun instead of arm muscles). A 1 MOA gun.
Cons; internet chatter seems to suggest that this is less accurate than Mossberg and CZ, but is a close second. It only shoots high dollar ammo accurately.

Thanks again,

Outside of anything made by Anschutz, the best 22s I've ever owned or shot are the CZs. I have a 452-2E ZKM Standard, I bought it at Cabelas and have been in love ever since. I don't have mine scoped, I prefer to shoot open sights. It was around $400 with tax, and I don't regret spending that for it. I haven't shot paper at 100yds with it yet, just steel and its always right on. The goofy little tangent sight actually works too! It does have the dovetails built into the receiver, you just have to add rings.

I'd say pick up the CZ. It's built to last, and there's a large aftermarket for it too. I have only seen a secondhand one for sale ever, so finding a used one may be hard. Cabelas stocks them, if you're near DFW, and one of my friends ordered his from WalMart. You can even order them with a threaded barrel :anamatedbanana One day I'll shell out for one of those $800-1500 German pieces, but for now the CZ has my 22 fix covered.

drjoker,
I copied this from another thread:

I just bought a Savage Mark II FVXP (bolt action, adjustable trigger, syn stock, heavy barrel, with a 4X scope mounted) from Wal-Mart. It was from the special order catalog they don't stock them in the store. $250 plus tax!!! The Accutrigger is smooth and light. It is very accurate!! Google Savage Mark II, Gun Blast has a review. Check out the Savage website.

I did a lot of research before I bought it. The wood stock is much better looking! But I didn't want to spend the money for it and they don't have a package deal for the wood stock with a scope."

The trigger is real nice (adjustable). I never did find one in Houston to look at. So I took a leap of faith and special ordered it from Wal-Mart. I'm real happy with it!!

Good Luck, OE

Can you mount a scope on a Savage Mark II FVT .22LR?

Can you mount a scope on a Savage Mark II FVT .22LR? This is NOT the one with the picatinny rail, but it is the one with the peep sights. Preferably, I want to be able to mount it without drilling, tapping, or other expensive gunsmithing. Thanks.
