Rather than focus on the hate monger who perpetrated this crime and the hate speech which emboldened his act of attempted suicide by cop, let's reflect on the heroism of Officer Stephen T. Johns who was murdered in the line of duty. Most of the DC museum security guards are ex-military or former police officers. While some like to joke about rent-a-cops, many of us forget that these private security guards are often the last line of defense in many public places. The DC museum guards were highly trained and well respected.

This Sunday at 3pm, Holocaust Museum Houston is holding a memorial service honoring Officer Johns. This service will be about the man and the guest book and a video will be sent to the grieving family. Some well-respected clergymen will be leading this multi-faith service and there will be some other prominent speakers. I think it would be very meaningful for the family of Officer Johns if there were a large turnout at this service. Several local synagogues are raising funds for Officer Johns wife and three young children. To date, this is the only memorial of this type planned in the country.

Please consider attending this ceremony. Also, if you have never toured the Houston Museum it is the finest in the US after the DC museum. Guided tours are available on weekends, every hour on the half hour. Admission is free.

I was able to read the shooters web site last night before it was pulled from the server and if there was EVER a valid reason for a national domestic terrorist watch list, this guy was it. Here is his web addy, but it has been pulled at this time; probably for good I hope.

The ONLY way i'd be for a domestic terrorist watch list is that you actually had to DO something to get on it (i.e. not jsut write crazy stuff, but do something)
and have a way to get off of it, as well.

This kind of thing is precisely when we have to guard our liberty the most. It's really easy to take away the rights of someone despicable like this shooter, and then it's easier to take away all sorts of other rights.

Not long after the shooting, we already had people calling for preventative detention of folks based on things they say.

at the risk of really getting off track, I still have to ask.... when did anti-Semitism bocome a "right wing" attitude. I have always considered "conservatives" as being the greatest supporters of Israel, although it seems that a majority of Jewish voters vote dem. At 56 years of age, I still can't understand the connection. Nuts like this old man are NOT "right wing" or "left wing", neither are they conservative or liberal (politically speaking). They are just individuals with warped values, In my opinion there is no difference between "White Supremesist" groups like the KKK, and extremist groups like the "Weather Underground" or "Earth First". I don't consider either to be left or right politically... just fringe nut jobs with like minded ignorance in their little groups.

This is all just a scam. It was made up. Think about it. It is against the law to have a gun in DC, so how could this guy possibly have a gun. You knuckleheads are so gullible - maannnnnn!

On the serious side, it said the other guards dispatch this clown in quick fashion. This kind of quick accurate reaction comes from training I figured and sure enough it come out that these guards were mostly ex-military and law enforcement and trained to a much higher degree than your average mall cop. Training does pay off. You will not rise to the occasion, you will revert to your training. And, it goes to show you that laws won't stop bad guys with guns, but good guys with guns can.

Wasn't there a fellow arrested last week or so for threatening the President on his website just before Mr. Obama gave a commencement speech? Does anyone seriously believe they can say whatever they want in public without reprecussions? Is it responsible to defend hate speech given that there are those among us who do not think, clearly or otherwise? On the other hand being able to silence foes is what got Hitler elected (among others).
