Rem 870 Vs Mossberg 500 Combo

Post by Clutch »

I did a search and couldn't find any previous post, maybe didn't look hard enough as I got hung up reading about a guy that failed to show his CHL in a movie theatre parking lot...but I digress...

I am looking to purchase a new shotgun in the near future. I am looking for 2 actually. i want a rifled barrel for slugs and I want a versatile 12g for dove/quail/etc. Mossberg 500 combo has two barrels, one rifled and one with a screw in choke. Remington would have to purchase two barrels or two different guns. Thus the dilemma... Anybody got any input? I like the Remington because of the name and I have owned several Remington long guns over the years; reliable, etc. However, for the $$$ Mossberg deal is hard to pass up... If anyone could add their $.02, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Look harder for the 870 combo packages. I have a "combo" I bought many years ago. They are out there and I swear I have seen them advertised at Academy or Cabellas just within the past month, with various lengths of both barrels to choose from.

As far as reliability I have never owned a Mossberg. But from what I have seen over the years and people's posts about an occasional jam or issue with a Mossberg the Rem 870 will always be my first choice. I have yet to see or experience ANY issue with the Remington. It breaks down pretty darn easy too. I just stripped mine down a few months ago and converted it to a serious home SD shotgun.

I have never owned a Remington scatter gun but have owned a couple different mossberg 500a shotguns, I found them easy to operate and durable, in fact my hd gun is an 18.5 in 500a loaded with oobuck. the safety is easey to reach even for leftys.Extra barrels are not expensive, I think that the last time that I looked they were around $100 or a bit less. A mossberg will get the job done.

I'm sure you can't go wrong with either of them, though I prefer Winchester for a pump, though they're no longer made. For an auto my choice would be Rem 1100.

I personally have the Mossberg 500 and LOVE IT. It is a great shotgun and have never had any issue with it. You can also get an 18.5 inch barrel for use as a home defense weapon.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. I have a remington, a mossberg, and a couple of winchesters and they are all good. I think that the remington is bit more refined and possibly a little better built, but the winchester and mossberg are certainly more than adequate. I have nothing to base that opinion on other than just my regular handling and shooting of the guns. I think if you are a very serious shotgunner and are planning to put thousands of rounds through it, you should probably go with the remington, but for normal use, save the money and go mossberg. Just my opinion.
