So is carrying a gun. Does that make us CHL's muggers?
No, but it should make us more alert...
Not unless we are paranoid. Now if you see a guy wearing a ski mask in the summer...go orange. Winter is a time for ski masks. Getting alarmed for a guy wearing a ski mask outside in the winter is just plain silly. Saying howdy is not a threat...ski mask or not!
Sitting at home in front of your computer/smartphone (or wherever you are), you have the benefit of hindsight knowing Mr. Warmface was no threat. At that specific moment in time, my brother didn't have that luxury. Have a nice day

This has nothing to do with where I am sitting. It is winter and it is darned cold. Folks are wearing winter cloths. I would not and have not thought twice about folks wearing ski masks...and I have seen them doing it lately. Not a second thought because it is COLD!. I'm sorry if I have offended you. I surely did not mean to. Typically when a poster puts up their event, they are looking for opinions. My opinion is that being approached by a person wearing a ski mask, in a public area, in the winter is absolutely no reason to consider drawing a DEADLY weapon on them. Like I said...sorry if this offends you, but straight up...I feel your brother seriously over reacted if he was actually about to draw his weapon as you said in your original post. It is one thing to go to an observant or even guarded position...but to actually be considering drawing on them is way overboard. As the good guys we have the added obligation of being sure our target is actually a target. It may put us at a slight disadvantage, but we can't risk blasting someone or even causing someone else to blast us for the wrong reasons.

No offense taken actually. You have your opinion, I have mine.
So in my opinion, had he drawn his weapon under that circumstances, that can consider overdone. He didn't draw because he saw no gun in Mr Warmface's hands, and decided at the time it wasn't necessary. He was startled, so he has every right to, for a split second, consider drawing "if" the threat becomes legit. Like I said, everybody can be a Monday morning quarterback. Given the circumstances and the fact that afterwards the guy didn't even know my brother was armed. If my brother was reckless, Mr. Warmface would've know he was armed!

...LOL...I do get a kick out of his new nick name...Mr Warm Face...anytime I see a ski mask now I will be thinking...Mr Warm Face.

ANY time someone approaches me, especially at a gas station or similar area, my alert level goes up by at least 1. This may be Texas, but strangers rarely walk up simply to strike up a conversation (at least with me). Typically it would be someone asking for directions, but to not be instantly on guard would be silly IMHO. A ski mask would only make it an even more questionable situation.
YMMV, but that's just the way I am. I VERY rarely wear a ski mask and unless you were raised in the Sahara there's not much need for anything beyond a wool hat in this area... at least for me (once again). No matter what the season, if someone is approaching with a ski mask and his hands in his pockets, it's an immediate trigger for me.
I don't think it's paranoia, more like common sense. But again, just my opinion.

I don't even own a ski mask. It never gets cold enough down here to wear one...unless you work outside all day in the winter time.
Anytime a complete stranger comes up and starts a conversation, I go into condition yellow, and back away to give me space. It's a trust issue I guess. But it's kept me safe so far, so I'll keep that mindset.

One more thing I will say. I read a whole lot of posts on this forum where guys speak of pulling a weapon out and being the victor. Any of you fellers ever wonder if maybe the other guy might also be a CHL? Maybe he or she is a better shot than you??? Maybe you end up dead instead??? For instance...what if the ski mask was hiding the face of High Velocity...or even Compvest???? HMMMMMM? Ever think of that angle?
Think hard folks....before you resort to gun play. How would your brother have dealt with this situation before he had a CHL? There was no immediate threat what so ever! Pulling a gun should never have crossed his mind!
+1 I haven't been around the gun forums in several days, been playing with the truck stuff instead. I come on here and read the OP.....
It's actually warmer in northern Japan this time of year under 12' of snow than it is here in DFW. Being a motorcycle rider (and living in ski country for the last 3 years), ski masks and neck/face warmers aren't a threatening piece of apparel.
Yes, be on your toes. But don't tell me how to dress. It's COLD! ...no, it wasn't me that approached your bro

That's too late to shift into yellow - - - you're dead meat if it's a bad guy. We must learn to live in condition yellow it is doable without delving into paranoia.
The ski mask - - - I would worry more about it if the temprature was above 40 degrees and he was wearing one.

The problem is we live in Houston Texas. Nobody wears a ski mask here unless you're about to rob a convenience store. It is really all relative and depends on where you are located

I don't know what part of Houston your in that is warmer than the rest of the City but it was 25 degrees in Houston last week. When folks are accustomed to 55 degree weather...25 feels pretty darned cold. It was cold enough in Houston for a ski mask. Your presumption that nobody wears a ski mask in Houston unless they are about to rob a convenience store is just wrong. Your right...it is all relative. Houston at 25 degrees is like New York at 15 below zero. I have seen several guys wearing ski masks here in the DFW area the past few weeks. By your reasoning, our armed robbery rate must be sky rocketing.
Maybe you overstated your brothers reaction. It would be normal to notice the guy and be alert. It is NOT normal to think about pulling a weapon. It is normal to say howdy back to him and be friendly unless he starts acting strange. It is a sad day in Texas when saying howdy to a fellow Texan can cause them to draw on you. I would expect unfriendly behavior in the Northeast...not here in Texas. Things really are not as bad as all that folks. Don't let reading gun forums and the "crime" stories these forums focus on make us paranoid. The majority of people are good human beings that wouldn't hurt a fly. Again...it is good to be alert if threatened...but saying howdy is NOT a threat!!!! Just as clothing style is NOT a threat. You see a dude in a ski mask when it is summer...go ahead and flip out...he is about to roll you. Ski mask in winter/cold....just a guy staying warm.

Houston didn't get the arctic blast like the rest of the nation did?? People should dress accordingly. But at the same time you wouldn't expect girls to wear high heels and miniskirt in Sapporo in February.... 0* but they did.
Point is, don't freak out. Just assess the situation
