Armed LEO's

Post by stash »

Read in the paper this morning that the El Paso PD is going to purchase 1,145 M4 rifles for their patrol officers and detectives. That should make them one of the better armed agencies in Texas. And to top it off they are buying them from a Austin, Texas outfit. The contract was 700k plus according to the paper. Good for them.

I think those are the "Texas" M4's by Bushmaster from GT Distributing. Those are the same rifles ordered by the DPS a while back. Somewhere on this mess of a computer I have a copy of the "Torture Test" these rifles are put through. As I understand it, this was requested by the DPS as a part of their selection process.

Edited to add manufacturer name

The police chief gave a presentation to City Council yesterday requesting approval for the rifles. He cited the Juarez violence and fear of a spill over as the main reason for the purchase. Seems reasonable. There have already been a couple of executions and at least one kidnapping on this side of the border, which have been directly linked to the drug trade. In all cases, the victims had come to El Paso thinking the Cartel would not follow them across. They were wrong. The Chief is definitely afraid that things are going to pop over here.

$700,000/1,154 guns = $606/gun. Heckuva price! The military pays $800-1,100 depending on configuration for M16s.

I think you are correct. Here is the link to the "Texas DPS Bushmaster:" http://www.gtdist.com/ProductDetail.asp ... 3F16M4TXIO" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There is a link there that goes to the testing specs.

Yea, I'd pay $800-$1100 too, if it continued to go bang while I held the trigger... :fire

karder:

That's great that your local El Paso LEO's are getting all those M4's.
They are being pro-active.

Are you carrying enough spare ammo yourself?
You can have too little ammo, but you can't have too much ammo on body.

El Paso went and got themselves some New Tools for "Customer Service"

Remember that story about the Boston Mayor not taking the FREE M4s from the Army, any reason El Paso couldnt take them?

GT Distributing sells the Texas Bushmaster M4 (same one that these guys are getting) for $899.95 as far as I know.

$900 not bad for a small quantity. I mean if you were buying 1100 guns, you might get a discount from GT or Bushmaster. Would be a lot of "yellow forms" to fill out though. :lol:
