The Last Christmas Gift....

Post by newTexan »

So, back at Christmas time, the little woman went out and got me a $150 gift certificate to the local gun store. They were apparently really nice and friendly and helpful. There's just one problem...

I have no idea what to spend it on.

I'm half contemplating walking up to the counter and saying I need a bottle of Hoppes 9 and as much practice ammo as this will buy. But, I thought why not solicit some opinions on here. If you had $150 in gift certificate, what would you buy?

Do you have night sights on your carry weapon?

My personal opinion is that if I could make only one modification to a personal defense handgun it would be the addition of nightsights. The majority of the defensive use of firearms is in low/no light situations. The sight at night is a natural extension of the sights you practice with in the day time so no learning curve.

Besides, at night seeing the three dots glow on your nightstand, telling you exactly where your firearm is can be very reassuring. And you will still have money left for Hoppe's and a fair amount of practice ammo.

Merry Christmas

That would make a nice down payment on a new carry gun.
It'd also buy you a great holster or 2, AND a LOT of ammo. Or a combination of the 3. ;-)

Depends on what you don't have ... I had a $100 GC a few months back but all I could think to buy was cleaning supplies to replinish my cleaning box.

Night sights is a good suggestion.

A quality tactical flashlight and/or assisted opening pocket knife ?

New/better holster and a quality range bag?

A small handgun safe?

Decent quality riflescope? $150 is close to enough for an entry level Nikon or Leupold 3-9x40

.22 rifle? $150 should buy you a Marlin 60 and you're close to a Ruger 10/22 or Remington 597

That's also almost enough for a Mossberg Maverick 12-gauge shotgun

10% down payment on Springfield M1A or a Kimber 1911? :thumbs2:

I'm wanting to buy optics for my AR15 so I'd add it to that, personally I've told myself no more firearms until I get the optics that I want. But adding some to it to buy a new gun is always a good option.

Is there anything you've been wanting but haven't had the money? I like the previous suggestion for night sights if you don't already have them.

I don't think I'm much help.

The title of this thread just gets to me. Every time I read it I think of a grand father giving a young man a rifle for Christmas. The Grand father takes him out and teaches him to shoot. Then the grand father dies before the next Christmas. The grand son is now grown and telling the story as a fond last memory of his Grand Father... well anyway.

I had a thought along those same lines too...except that the gift was spending time with the loved one...

Back to the lecture at hand...I like the flashlight or ammo idea. Maybe extra mags? Maybe put it towards something on layaway even?

Don't leave us hangin.

I don't know how you're able to keep a gift card this long. It would be burnin a hole in my pocket the first day.
