New Member of Growing Family! (RANGE REPORT UPDATE)

Post by williamkevin »

Today I purchased my first S & W pistol, the M & P in 9mm! This is my second polymer-framed pistol. My first one was not a full size (PT140 MilPro) and I did not like it. This one however feels REALLY good in my hand! Although I will probably not carry this one regularly, I will shoot it in IDPA. I'll submit a range report as soon as I can get out there.

Cheers!

Very nice williamkevin . :thumbs2:

You made a good choice for a IDPA gun. I've heard great things about those.

You will love this gun.

Try the different arch inserts. You will be surprised what a difference it makes in feel.

Funny, I just took delivery of a M&P full sized in .40 on the 29th. Cleaned it, put 200 rounds through it yesterday at Marksman, and am very impressed.

Fresh OOB, the trigger was godawful. Stiff, grinding, binding. I read through the manual, cleaned the gun, and put a drop of oil at the trigger hinge point (not sure the correct term), per the manual. Dry fired it a fair bit, and after the first couple hundred rounds it's much improved.

I was surprised to find that I'm most comfortable with the smallest grip. I don't think I've got small hands; I used the large grip on an XDM, and have the larger grip on my Walther PPS. While I like the idea of the beavertail on the M&P, I'm finding that if I get my fingers wrapped around the front of the grip like I'm used to, then the beavertail clonks my thumb knuckle under recoil. Rotating my grip thumb-wise relieves the knuckle, but reduces my finger's reach around the front of the grip. I like the larger palm swell of the medium grip, but the medium further limits the reach to the front of the grip.

Accuracy was great.

I have had mine both full size and compact for a while and love it. The only thing I wish they improved was the trigger. i like a nice solid aluminum trigger like the sigs or even XDs. The mushy soft, plastic trigger is my biggest complaint.

I noticed that as well. I'll have to wait to see if I like it or not. I wonder if anyone makes a custom trigger for this?

Try Dan Burwell at http://www.burwellguns.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

He did a trigger job on my M&P 9c and it's MUCH improved! I have about a 4 pound pull with a greatly reduced reset and overtravel.
