Holy Toledo! Did Obama Sign a RKBA law?

Post by drjoker »

IANAL,

Starting tomorrow, it will be LEGAL for a CHL to carry a loaded gun in a national park in Texas! Obama signed this law! I'm gonna tell my liberal friends that it is O.K. to be for 2nd amendment rights. Hey, Obama signed the law! Maybe my liberal wife and friends will pick more 2nd amendment friendly candidates at the next Democratic primary....

If you follow the last link in the story, you get an article that includes the following:
A coalition of groups that included the Fraternal Order of Police and the Association of National Park Rangers slammed the bill, saying it will "increase the risk of poaching, vandalism of historic park treasures and threats to park visitors and staff."
Who is this Fraternal Order of Police? I thought most police were supportive of CHL - or is this forum coloring my perception?

Just my $.02, but I think most cops who work the streets as cops support CHL and want it for their non-LE family members. But the hierarchy of any police organization (including the Fraternal Order) is highly political, almost excusively "urban" (read: anti-gun), and quite often has strong ties to the northeastern United States (also read: anti-gun)

FOP
Etymology: Middle English; akin to Middle English fobben to deceive, Middle High German voppen
1 : a foolish or silly person
2 : a man who is devoted to or vain about his appearance or dress : coxcomb, dandy

The first explains their view on RKBA. The second explains the gold braid on the disco outfits they wear at press conferences.

Does this cover Corps of Engineer land as well? That would be nice if it did.

It will be the law, but an anti group got a judge to institute a "stay" while the required environmental impact study is done. I haven't heard about any progress on that. Maybe someone has more recent info.
Ø resist

Take away the second first, and the first is gone in a second.

It doesn't cover COE land.

There are those who think they know better than us what is best for us. Unfortunately, there are also those who prove the first group to be correct.

He did nothing to help us. He simply wanted to pass a piece of legislation this was attached to so he signed it. Under G.W. Bush we would have been able to carry in those parks but the anti-types did some things to stop it. So, the conservatives attached this to this bill knowing it would pass.

I say Obama had no choice because him fighting this after it was already okayed legally would give the Republicans a very high profile way to prove Obama and those in charge of the National Democrat Party are anti-2A. Something they cannot defend or stand with the elections of 2010 on their doorstep.

That ruling applied to the rule change (CFR), not the law. This change in law passed as a result of that judicial ruling, and overrides it.

Effective 2/22, it will be legal to carry a gun on any National Park property, if that carry is legal in the state where the NP is located. Handgun, long gun, concealed, open, loaded, otherwise... it means the law doesn't change just because you cross an invisible line into a national park.

IIRC, the ban on carrying in any building/structure where federal employees are working remains in effect. Thus, licensed CC is only allowed in the outdoor/open areas of the NP's. :leaving

Sucks this doesn't apply to COE lands. Be nice to have my gun on my boat.

One of my LEO buddies calls them (FOPs and most police chiefs) 'cop-o-crats' -- ie, mainly political appointees, or 'cop-inistrators'- admin positions with little boots on the street experience who push paper well.
