I created a new thread in response to marksiwel's post in the Buying a gun with CHL thread...

I'm still waiting for some email repsonses from McBrides. 2 Phone calls and 7 emails about Mcbrides gun smithing zero answers! ANyone know a good smith in Austin?

I had problems with McBrides gunsmith services. I called ahead and the assured me I could get a chamber cast. I drove all the way down there and the gunsmiths told me no. They were nice and recommended Sportsman's Finest in Bee Cave. A recent internet search indicates that that smith is no longer with Sportsman's Finest.

I had a much larger problem with Red's gunsmith. He had a safety concern with performing some work on my Dad's 257 AI that I inherited, tried to call me once and then proceeded to do it anyway. When I picked up the gun, it had a note on the tag that said "gun may be unsafe". I e-mailed him and he gave me a long winded answer, that included a "I wouldn't shoot it myself". I didn't even request the work, he was just supposed to evaluate. Still makes my blood boil - it was a family heirloom.

A common theme for me has been having my instructions scrambled between the counter and the actual smith. I'd really like to find a smith that I could deal with directly.

I've had several recommendations for Dietz in New Braunfels. Old man Dietz was very well respected. I believe his son's have taken over the business and I don't have any references for them.

Just looking to remove the Magazine disconnect, throw on some new Sights (Maybe), and see if they will detail strip, clean my Browning Hi Power.

Looks like I'm gonna be better off saving up and sending it to Cylinder and Slide for the works, Get the thing Re Blued, Get some trigger work some on it, Get a Better Hammer (Can you say Hammer Bite?) throw in a new Spring and Barrell, and some Novak Night Sights.

Of course for the price I could buy a new or two...hmmmmm.

I also have links to some high end smiths, who seem a bit more targeted for competition, but those are mail in as well.

There's also the notation for a potential smith in Cedar park on Gunbroker.com. I have no verification though.

I have gone upstairs at McBrides to talk to the gunsmith directly and that seemed to help a lot. But they seem next to impossible to get on the phone.

I keep contemplating contacting Hank to price a tuneup on my .45, but every time I get close I decide to save the money for a better pistol instead.

if you dont mind the short drive to san antonio...Dury's off of the 281 is great! I have taken my 1911 Mil-Spec in there and had them add a new mainspring housing, trigger, beavertail, hammer and as soon as I order my sights I will have them put those on also. Paul at the Gunsmith desk is very polite and professional and its very easy to talk to the gunsmiths either via phone or in person. GREAT place and GREAT work! Mike is the gunsmith that works on my 1911. I have talked to him in length over the phone and in person VERY knowledgeable and professional.
