NY Carry License

Post by robbyg1 »

I will be moving to Texas in the near future, I currently have a valid NY carry permit. Will I have to attend classes for a Texas conceal permit or will my NY license be honored?

Welcome to the forum and to Texas in the near future.

Texas honors New York permits.

If or when you eventually decide to get a Texas CHL, you need to jump through all the hoops. There is no shortcut for having a permit from another state.

You will need to make sure that when you change residences, that NY will update your address and allow you to keep your concealed carry license as a non-resident license with a Texas address. If so, then as Jim stated, you would be legal. If not, you will need to get a Texas or other states non-resident CHL to be legal to carry.

Also...

It would be very wise to acquaint yourself with Texas statutes regarding concealed carry, use of force, threat of deadly force and use of deadly force. In addition, statutes surrounding where you may or may not carry, and what constitutes legal and valid notification of such. What better way to acquaint yourself with these (and many many many more) items than acquiring your Texas CHL. :txflag:

robbyg1, welcome to the forum! Glad to have you with us.

grumble made a good suggestion to acquaint yourself with the Texas concealed handgun laws.

Here is the booklet that DPS publishes and is handed out in every Texas CHL class:

Thanks everyone for your input. I've had a carry license for the past 14 years and yes they are almost impossible to get now. I will be retiring from the Dept. of Correctional Services soon and am looking forward to moving to San Antonio.

If you are a sworn officer, can you carry under LEOSA? That would be a lot easier than getting a CHL.

OK. I rather doubt the State of New York will issue a non-resident license; but you can find out for sure.

You could get a Pennsylvania license with your Texas address, which seems to work perfectly well.

Texas law requires that you get a Texas driver license and register any out-of-state vehicles in Texas within 30 days of establishing residence. Re-titling the vehicles is rather expensive. I don't know what it costs these days. It was $200 when we moved here in 1995.

As a practical matter, many people don't change their license or registration until the first time they are pulled over. I've known people to get away with it for years by claiming that they are here only for school, even though they own a house here.

You can decide what to do. ;-)

Welcome

I spent 20+ years in NY and even worse I made the mistake of selling my guns when I moved back there for a year about 15 years ago ... I should have just put them in a box and left it ... COncealed means concealed ... LOL
