UTA Poster Child for Campus Carry

Post by gemini »

University of Texas Arlington; another campus alert issued regarding attempted armed robberies in the schools
parking lots off Cooper St. There have been similar incidents recently reported on campus. Group of thugs
approaching women and men etc. What's it going to take for our State Legislature to quit playing games and
pass campus carry?

For them to meet more than once a Blue moon, and for them to get rid of the way they pass laws and make it like other states.

i agree with Mark. It's sad that the campus is 2 maybe 3 blocks (correct me if i'm wrong) from the police station/ jail. Yet the students can't arm themselves legally on campus. :???:

I believe it's more like a mile, to the UTA police station. UTA is on Cooper St. The campus police station is on Davis. The Arlington city jail is about half a mile from the parking lots on Cooper.

Let's hope the campus carry bill is reintroduced VERY early in this next legislative session.

just point to Utah, its legal there, and its much easier to get a permit than in Texas.

Yes they do. Their drinking water is just awful. They get it from the Great Salt Lake. :smilelol5:

Never cared for the more remote lots even back in the mid 70's when I was going there. I was never worried about my personal safety back then but I always had for the time expensive radio equipment in all vehicals.

These recent incidents didn't happen in a remote lot. These were the lots that had frontage on Cooper St. I currently have 2 kids
in college. 1 in grad school, private univ, classes are mostly held in the evenings (@ dark thirty). 1 attends UTA. I have an
immediate concern for both of their safety. Besides the hassle of me having to disarm, then rearm etc. when I visit either kid when
they are in school.
I have several friends that are with DPD. All feel that CHL should be able to carry anywhere they are able too. Eventually I would like to see that happen. But for now I'd settle for 3 changes to CHL law.
1. Campus carry (to include college AND high schools)
2. CHL carry in 51% places, provided the CHL's are not consuming alcohol (lots of good burgers and pizza bar food)
3. Positive employers parking lot bill (ban employers from prohibiting gun storage in employees vehicles while providing liability
protection to the employers)
I know I'm beating a dead horse; but every time I see another "campus" incident, it just refuels my resolve to not forget to stay after my local Rep's in the legislature. Sorry for the rehash, vent, long post etc.

No you're not. Now is the time to start talking about it occasionally. And set a personal course of action as to how you can help to get the campus carry bill and the employer parking lot bill passed in the next legislative session.

I'd like to see an end to all statutes that place private property off limits. We took care of the issue with churches, amusement parks, and hospitals; now it's time to fix private schools, bars, horse and dog tracks, and professional sporting events.

We should apply the same standard to public schools (no matter what level) that we apply to parks and government buildings: the people own it, and they should be able to carry.

The School thing wont happen unless you can overturn the Federal Ban (Good luck)
I wish we could do that thing like that one state where they said if its "Made in this State, From this State, and owned by someone in this state, the Feds got no right to say anything"

Actually, the Federal Gun Free School Zone ban allows states to override the law. We already have this in the fact state law allows us to carry on school grounds. Harrell ISD in Texas already allows CHL's to carry if approved by the school administration. If you can get permission from the proper administration folks, you can carry in a school also.

What would have to be done is get the state statutes to allow carry in the buildings of all schools. Will that ever happen? I doubt it, but it could be done. Even if they did, I am sure they would put some sort of allowance for the schools to post a 30.06 then. :banghead:

It's a real fun feeling knowing that armed robberies have been occurring just a few minutes after I get out of class in the same lot I park. Thanks, Austin, for knowing what's best for my safety. I guess it's not all so bad, though - there is suddenly a surplus of attractive girls asking for an escort to their cars after class ;-).

If we are going to get school carry, I mean every school and every event, we are going to have to allow the TSRA to do more or create a state group that has the power to move our laws in a positive direction. Mr. Cotton, I think it was Charles, posted that if we have to let our desires be known and he is right. Our best bet is to become a member of the TSRA and let them know where to push.

Senator Duncan ignored everyone except the "Urban Power Elites" and killed any chance of "Campus Carry" happening before the Democrats blocked the votes last session if I remember correctly. If he does not change his ways I will do all I can to get him replaced with someone that will move to restore our rights. Not that I am anyone but a angry employer of his. Changes in this area are up to US and will not happen if we do not Join now, let our voices be heard now and spend the money to get those who we know will work for us elected.
