Thanks for clearing that up Jim. I wasn't sure and couldn't remember the conclusion of a thread that dealt with that issue a while back. Instead of saying "could" I should have said "might."

Scire.Factor, it sounds like you already are aware of this, but yes, some CHL laws are strange.

Hello all! I want to start off by letting you all know that I am knew to this forum and going to be new to Texas.

I am a Florida resident currently serving overseas in the armed forces and moving to TX in the near future. I have a concealed carry permit with the state of FL and I know TX honors it. I know a lot about the laws governing the state of FL, but know very little about the ones in TX. I was hopeing that someone on here knows the big differences between the two states in regards to concealed carrying, but most specifically on printing (is it legal/illegal), where you can/cannot carry, and if TX has the "no retreat" law equivalant to FL.

Thank you in advance!

You can get all the Texas CHL laws here at the DPS site:

Hola amigo!

Welcome. If you email me (my email is below in my signature), I'll mail you the law book that comes with your CHL packet if you take a class here in Texas. And, if you promise to buy me a beer next time you're in Dallas, I'll even call you and give you the quick run-down on a couple of tricky parts in the law book (it's not rocket science, but considering that it IS a book of laws, it's a bit dry and hard to read in spots). :txflag:
Thanks!

Welcome :txflag:

Note that in Texas it's a Concealed HANDUN License instead of like Florida's concealed WEAPONS permit, so no billyclubs, nunchucks, throwing stars, illegal knives, etc ...

Welcome to the forum!

You've come to the right place to learn about Texas gun laws.

As for the school zone exemption, others have quoted the conventional wisdom, but I have studied it and come away with a slightly different take: if Texas recognizes your Florida CWP, then you are licensed by the state (Texas) in which the school is located. It doesn't say "license issued by...", it says "licensed by..."

Here's an earlier discussion on that subject:

Yup, I am coming from Aviano. It is a beautiful location, but it does not come close to living in the States!

Wow all! You have all provided me some really good input and I am very happy that I found this forum. Thank you!

I remember that thread. I understand and agree with everyone's logic, but am not totally convinced it would work out that way in court or that that was the intention of the wording of the statute. Even though the similarities to DL's are there, I don't think that because the word "issued" isn't there that this isn't what it means. States recognize other states licenses, but that doesn't mean they are licensed by whatever state they are visiting. Why else would they have put that in there anyway? They knew there would be reciprocity. I think that if they wanted it to mean that those with licenses from other states recognized by Texas could carry within the GFZ of a school they wold have phrased it differently. I repeat, I think those with licenses that Texas recognizes should be included in the exemption, but I just don't agree that this is the way it is written. JMHO

See how confusing it can be Scire.Factor? Until things like this get worked out in court they can be a mess.

Welcome to Texas and the forum. Since no one else has mentioned it (unless I missed it), I wanted to point out that Texas will give you an official thank you for your service, sort of. If you want a Texas CHL, as an active duty military member you get it for no fee from the state. You do have to pay for the required class and fingerprints and such, but the license itself is free.

What part of the state, and when, are you coming too? Many of us get together occasionally for range trips. I am sure we can arrange some company to show you some nice ranges when you get here.

I am going to be in San Angelo probably as early as August, but as usual with the government, I am hurrying up to wait for an exact date. I would love to get together for stuff like that. Keep me updated!

Italy was nice for the first 6 months and then it got annoying, difficult, and now frustrating. I currently own and carry (when I am back in the States) a S&W 9mm M&P. I used to own an AR 15 and a XD 9mm. When I get to TX, I plan on building up my collection again. :anamatedbanana
