After 3 months...

Post by newTexan »

So, I recently got a gently used gun from a coworker who needed the cash. He cleaned it and lubed it about 3 or 4 months ago and hasn't touched it since. Do I need to do anything before I take it to the range? Maybe field strip it and re-lube the slide?

"Gun" is a very large category. Can you be more specific?

Yeah, I was gonna say, if your "gun" is a Glock, keep oil away from it. If it's a 1911, you should soak it daily in gun oil, take it out for a manicure, and watch the Academy Awards together. Otherwise those 1911's get petulant "rlol"
I don't fear guns; I fear voters and politicians that fear guns.

If it has a slide, it is most likely a semi-auto pistol.

I would field-strip it, make sure the barrel is clean and unobstructed, check the bearing surfaces for a film of lubricant, put it back together, and check the action for smoothness and lack of excessive friction (gritty feel or the like).

Three months in a safe or sock drawer is not the same as three months under the seat of a vehicle or <ugh> in a boat.

Someone who really knows their stuff with computer animation should make a 1911/Glock version of that old classic "The Odd Couple" with 1911 in the Tony Randall roll and Glock in the Jack Klugman (sp?) roll.

1911 comes home, Glock is sitting on the couch watching the game with a little pile of potato chip crumbs around his ejection port and empty beer cans and shell casings littering the floor. Glock burps and 1911 turns up his muzzle and walks briskly toward the pantry to grab a cleaning swab and some Hoppes.

Ugh. Sorry for the great gun mystery. It's a couple year old Springfield XD. It was kept in a closet.

Thanks for the thoughts, and may I say the Glock/1911 cartoon sounds like a blast.

Wrong. With a 1911, you watch the CPAC convention speeches. With a Glock, you watch the MTV awards... ...with your hat on backwards and your gansta pants. Just ask Plaxico Burress.

It doesn't look like your hat is on backwards, but you could be wearing gangsta pants in that pic... just sayn'...
