It seems to me that the issue of loaded magazines and supposedly empty chambers is a common one for semi-autos and Glocks. That isn't the first ND story I have heard on that, but it is the first injury. I think it is a common error and that people can't seem to stop playing with the pistol to the point that the chamber is no longer empty.

I have nothing against Glocks or semi-autos, it is just a common error that I think all of us should pay attention to especially if we get a chance to teach new shooters.

My ND was due to my not clearing the magwell FIRST, chamber SECOND.

Never again.

It really does show you how much one little bullet can Ruin your day. I do like that the author wrote that he now carrys that brand of bullet because he knows it works, alittle morbid...

The story sheds some light on bullet expansion. I reckon from what the author wrote, this is the 9mm Gold Dot bullet with which he was shot. Obviously, it worked as designed. There appears to be at least one petal missing on the left side, indicating some deformation not normally seen in the standardized FBI ballistics tests utilizing gelatin in lieu of flesh and bone. Be interesting to find out just what round it was, there being several possibilities. Whatever it was, that's the one I want to use in 9mm.

Thank you for the post Andy.

Well, not really. Remember, the victim was shot at point blank range with the 9mm, achieving maximum velocity. From a distance, things may not always work that well where bone is encountered without an increase in either speed, like the 357 SIG, or bullet weight as with the .40 caliber and the .45 ACP. And, expansion is not always a given. In fact, experienced cops will often say bullet expansion is not the norm in handgun rounds. I can tell you from my own personal experience that I don't have a clue about bullet expansion in the human body, and I would sure like to leave it at that.

TAM:

Getting that new female shootist a Glock leads me to
envision some bad juju: Her macho, unthinking husband
will now have a Glock to pick up around the house, without
the small benefit of a manual safety to keep him from killing
his wife, completely by stupidity.

Husband to LEO's afterward: I just picked it up and it fired!

I found it interesting that the round "blew him back" about an inch without him supported by anything. I've always thought that a good hollow point would act like an Incredible Hulk punch.
