Co-witnessing is when your optic and BUIS are at the same level from the shooter's eye. You look through one and and you see through both. They "co-witness".surprise_i'm_armed wrote: For those of us not familiar with "co-witnessing" would you explain it?
Thanks in advance.

Amazing! I was trying to do that with a red dot on my Beretta CX4, yesterday and now I find out there's a proper term for it.karl wrote:Co-witnessing is when your optic and BUIS are at the same level from the shooter's eye. I also learned it recently... I had always wondered about it, then discovered that there actually was a term for it!

chabouk is right.
.38 Special and .357 Magnum have different case lengths.
.223 Remington and 5.56mm NATO cartidges are the same size (externally) but 5.56mm has higher allowable pressure. Additionally, the chamber spec for 5.56mm has a longer leade. In some case, there are other subtle differences such as brass thickness.

Well, I'm more in to pistols so that could be why I didn't know about the subtle differences between the two. I was just thinking back to basic training when the DS told us they were the same. Apparently he was misinformed aswell.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Well, generally you can shoot .223 from a rifle chambered for 5.56 NATO, but not the other way around. As your rifles would have been military ones, that may explain what you were told.MedicMan218 wrote:Well, I'm more in to pistols so that could be why I didn't know about the subtle differences between the two. I've though about an under folder AK 47. They are only 25" when folded and carry a potent round. Plus they are cheap. As far as securing the weapon there are a bunch of alternatives from simple to complex.

If the rifle is marked "5.56mm," it will safely shoot both cartridges. If the rifle is marked ".223," it might safely shoot both cartridges, but I wouldn't take it to the bank. If it has a "Wylde" chamber (like most Rock River Arms rifles), it will safely shoot both cartridges, with slightly better accuracy than one that is a regular 5.56 rifle.MedicMan218 wrote:Well, I'm more in to pistols so that could be why I didn't know about the subtle differences between the two. And by the way, the inverse is true for .308 Winchester/7.62 NATO. A rifle marked .308 Winchester will safely handle the NATO cartridge, but you shouldn't shoot a .308 in a rifle marked 7.62 NATO. I don't know if there is a "Wylde" chamber for .308 diameter cartridges.

I believe the Pentagon security officer who got hits on Bedell was shooting an HK UMP40.

It's up to the officer. They can even chose how to load the shotties, buck buck slug, all slug, buck slug, etc.74novaman wrote:Is it left to personal preference which is carried, or dept decides?gigag04 wrote:All of our officer's carry AR's or Shotguns in the car FWIW.
And are those department issued ARs or do officers bring thier own customs?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm just curious about PD long gun policy.
If you want to use an AR you can bring your own, OR if you have seniority use an issue one (Colt's with Trijicon reflex sight). If one is issued to you, you may set it up how you like.
