Personal check for CHL.

Post by killerquad »

I just wanted to verify that you can send in a personal check to pay for the CHL fee, and if so can it be an out of state check?? I moved out here almost a year ago from Commiefornia and since I NEVER use checks I have not ordered new ones. Thanks for the help.

Yes, you can send a personal check, but I don't recommend it. The DPS won't start processing your application until the checks clears the bank, and they think that takes 14 days.

I have never heard anything about a policy on out of state checks. If you really need to do that, I would call the CHL helpline at 800-224-5744 and ask.

Thanks guys. I will probably just send a cashiers check to be on the safe side. I know you cant pay for your car registration with an out of state check. Maybe I should quit procrastinating and order some new checks too.

Be sure you keep your receipt, they lost one of my students packet and had no record of having received it, with the stub he was able to prove that they had cashed his money order and they accepted the new packet we made up.

+1. I tell my students to make copies of everything they send in.

I did keep my receipt. I don't consider it one of the more secure payment methods. Credit card is much nicer :)

I sent a personal check in and it cleared about 5 days later. From mailing to license in hand it took exactly 67 days.

Hi, new member here. Is there any advantage to going through the online application process and paying up front, as far as faster processing when they later receive your application materials goes? In other words, if I register and pay online, get the materials from them, then take the CHL class, will it help speed things along when they eventually do get my completed application?

Thanks for any info,

Kevin

Welcome aboard. Most say it is a toss up except for sending a personal check. the DPS will accept checks now but hold applications for 14 days before starting to process it. It would seem to me that paying on line should help a little. They do not say it but citizen reasoning about Govt buracracy tells me that if they are going to hold a check from the most law abiding citizens in the state that they will want the bank money order at least deposited in the "end of the week deposits" before beginning processing.
Never trust the govt to trust you. ;-)

I just talked to another student who sent his packet in 5 weeks ago today, they couldn't find it, no record. He called me to verify all the numbers while we were on three-way phone. Later they found it and now will start processing it. :mad5
