Need help with new gun and repair on Bersa

Post by CC Italian »

This might be a little long so here it goes. Ok, first off I have had a bersa .380 thunder cc for about 2 years now and have had a few problems at first. First 100 rounds the spring in the trigger broke and then I put about another 900 rounds through it with no problems until recently. Now the bottom of the interior of the slide is pitted and has deep grooves in it. I just noticed this ( I will try to post pics when I get home). So I guess I am asking if I should get a new slide or get rid of it. I am going to bring it to the local gunsmith tommorow but I wonder if it will be under warrenty for something like that? The slide from bersa new is only around $50. I like the gun and it always fires when it works but I think the long term quality is starting to be negative. I know its not a glock but you would think that a slide would make it passed 1000 rounds.

Second issue, I want to get a revolver from the .32 H&R-.38 Special caliber range. It has a duel purpose. 1. It has to be concealable with just a t-shirt for the summer. 2. My better half who is only 4 foot 10 inches needs to be able to shoot it. She has a Ruger SP101 .32 H&R with a 3 1/6 barrel and can shoot it very accurate at the range. She can shoot a .38 special in a 4inch that is about 30 OZ. but a .38 special snub nose is a huge jump in recoil. I was thinking about getting another SP101 with a 2 1/4 inch barrel chambered with the .357 and load .38 specials in it but I don't know how well it will conceal on me with just a t-shirt. The handle on the .32 H&R I own is just to big a prints way to much with just a t-shirt. I guess I want a heavy small revolver with a 2 1/4-2 1/2 inch barrel. I have shot the little Kel-tecs and LCP but I personally don't like pocket guns and the recoil is way to much for my girl. She can't even shoot the bersa accurately.
Thanks

On your Bersa .380 question. The wear you are seeing on the bottom of the slide is normal as long as it doesn't continue to get worse. I noticed mine starting to wear early on and consulted a factory service center. They said they would replace the slide if it continued to wear down, but to not worry if it didn't get worse. I've kept an eye on it for about 2,000 rounds now and it has not really changed. Keep an eye on it and send it in if it continues to get worse.

Yup. That's what I thought you were describing. It is normal. If you want a more professional opinion you should contact Royce at Colorado Gun Works. He is probably the most experience Bersa gun smith in the U.S.

There's also authorized smith in Lott TX called John's guns who also does good work. Make sure you do UPS online and take the slide off so it can be described as gun parts. If you take it into the store and say the "G" word they will panic and make you ship it overnight air for a price rivaling the cost of a new slide.

Thats interesting, at least someone else has similar wear with thier Bersa. I just can't believe the gun does not jam as of yet. Sure enough it fires every time. I have just never seen pitting or grooves that deep on a slide that only has about a 1000 rounds through it. I will see what the smith says and maybe Bersa will give me a new slide. If not I might just buy a new slide. I like to carry this in the summer and even if it fires with this old slide it might be worth my piece of mind if I have a new slide. That just strikes me as something that will eventually start causing jamming problems with the pitting and grooves. Thanks for the info.

Embalmo - Does John provide documentation of the work performed? I've loved Royce's work at CGW but he absolutely refuses to ever provide any documentation to his customers.

I think the 2 1/4" Sp101 would be your best bet as far as a heavy small framed revolver. Or a S&W model 60 with the larger grips not the boot style grip. I know for a fact the Ruger is heavier though. I have not shot but heard good things about the stopping power yet low recoil of the .327mag and it is an in between caliber. I don't think a Lady Smith, model 60, or the SP101 will be harsh with a .38spl load. I bought some reloads from Collins Cartridge Company in Conroe, TX and was really impressed how well they shot and how accurate they were. Also loaded with a nice hollow point bullet for practice ammo prices.

Nope, the gun works perfectly and the warranty covers the cost, but no info. Have you tried requesting it? I haven't.

Oh, yeah. In fact I had a bit of a falling out with CGW over this one issue. I like to keep documentation of what was done to fix problems so that if they reoccur I can raise a red flag and have some proof of prior work performed. CGW flatly refused to provide written or verbal information and at one time even posted a note stating that on the Bersa Talk forum. :banghead: Again, I'm not knocking CGW's skills as a gun smith, I think Royce is stellar in that area.
