My wife learned to shoot 9mm with an S&W Mod 59, which is a faily large pistol. Recoil is minimal and she liked shooting it. It's too large for carry. Once she became accustomed to the 9mm, we started looking for something smaller.
We bought a Tarus P111 in 9mm for her. It is about the size of a Walther PPK and is very handy. I dn't care that much for the double action, but she likes it just fine.

Mr. Drummy, I'm in Lewisville also I have a XD9 and a Kahr PM9. My father-in-law has a PPK .380 and a Baretta Tomcat .22 and .38 revolver I can grab anytime she'd like to try them out. The closest place to here to shoot is the Bass Pro Shop indoor range but week day afternoons it's not to crowded. Shoot me a PM if interested.
These Pretzels are making me thirsty!
Although, I haven't been there in years, Ray's Hardware in Oak Cliff (section of Dallas) used to have one of the largest selections around. Also Gander Mountain has a large selection.
You've gotten a lot of suggestions; but I'll throw my $0.02 worth in. If you want something that's very concealable, check out the Beretta Tomcat .32 ACP. I have been pleased with mine.

I am using as my first handgun a Ruger KP9513., Its a stainless 9MM with a safety. Although its a double stack my wife doesn't have a problem with handling and firing it with her small hands.
I find it very reliable and more accurate than I am. 9MM ammo is economical.
Mine cost me $368 to take it out of Acadamy. Hard to beat the cost.
Some might not care fir the plastic grips and find them slik, but I don't have a problem with it even though I tend to get pretty sweaty palms in the Texas heat.

I stopped by there a few weeks ago, one entire wall is a counter of handguns - from inexpensive little Kel-Tac pocket guns to top of the line Kimbers - and everything in between. It was a nice break during a traffic rush; everyone in there was very helpful.S&W6946 wrote:Although, I haven't been there in years, Ray's Hardware in Oak Cliff (section of Dallas) used to have one of the largest selections around. I may just have to stop by there this weekend with my wife for her to take a look at a few handguns.

I've been super swamped with hunter ed. classes (dove season opener!) and not been on board to respond earlier. Y'all might check out options at http://www.dentoncountysports.com About 5 miles west of Lewisville.
While I agree with comments about .22s for some, I've had several newbie females (who listened well to professional instruction) go straight from Kahr Lady K-9 to PM-9 in one session. And a couple of 'em lately have settled on Kahr's semi-new economy "compromise" version of the two ...
Like someone said earlier, the 9s are somewhat more potent - and significantly cheaper to feed ...
Upcoming gun shows at Market Hall and Denton the last two weekends of this month ...

Suggestion #342,765...
Without any assistance other than my checkbook...
My wife picked out her very first handgun last year...
A Taurus PT 24/7 in 9mm...
Other than a long and somewhat heavy trigger-pull...I would say ts the smoothest 9mm I ever got to put one magazine through...After that I was banned from shooting it...hehehe "Its Mine!" (thats paraphrased of course)
I think you can get used to the only booger-boo I found with the pistol with that trigger, and it fits real nice in smaller hands...
To me its a mid-sized handgun, and would work well as a carry firearm for women or men...
I think once you check out how it feels in your hand you'll understand whats good about this firearm...Very ergonomic, comfortable...
I think those features alone give the user a confidence right out of the gate in positive handling and control to keep the pistol on target with ease...And I think that is a positive...
Good luck...
