9mm - What kind of ammo do you carry?

Post by dthlss1 »

I'm getting a 9mm soon for daily carry and I was wondering, for you seasoned CHL guys (and gals), what ammo do you carry? Hollow point? FMJ?

Also, if you don't mind, what ammo do you recommend to "break-in" my new gun? Brand and type?

Thanks! :cheers2:

Break-in... any target ammo, like Winchester USA (White Box).

For carry, Speer Gold Dot seems to be the most consistent and relatively inexpensive ammo.

Congrats on the new gun!

For target practice I use the Winchester whitebox FMJ ammo. Pretty inexpensive stuff and my Taurus eats it just fine.

As for defense, I am shooting 124 Gr. +P Remington Golden Sabers they're a Bonded Jacketed Hollow Point cartridge. Why you may ask? For one, I read this:

http://frag.110mb.com/ ( It was the tester number 07 cartridge )

and it seemed the Remington's did pretty good. Second, It was on sale when I bought it.

dthlss1:

Use FMJ (Full Metal Jackets) for paper-punching.

Use JHP (Jacketed Hollow Points) for BG-punching (BG - Bad Guy).

The use of JHP's for your SD (self defense) rounds is because they are
designed to expand within the BG and are less likely to over penetrate.

Over penetration is more common with FMJ's, meaning that they may travel
through the BG and hit someone or something behind them which doesn't
need to be shot.

There are several quality brands out there. Speer Gold Dots, Hornady, others.
Speer, by the way, makes a "short barrel" version for 2" snubbies, maybe 3"
barrels too. Short barrel weapons give the bullets somewhat less effective
velocity than longer barrelled weapons.

Use brands like the above, that LEO's use.
Handloads are more of a problem in court if you have to defend yourself after
an incident.

My general rule of thumb is to run at least 200-300 flawless FMJ target rounds through the gun to make sure that it functions well. Then, I like to run a box or two of my selected carry ammo through it without having any failures. At that point I feel comfortable that the gun will function, and will do so with my selected ammo.

As for 9mm carry rounds - I'm partial to the 124 grain +P Speer Gold Dots, but have more recently been using the 127 grain +P+ Winchester Ranger round.

Blazer Brass was my favorite practice ammo back when price and supply offered me some options.

I carry bonded Winchester Ranger 115 gr.

As has been stated, FMJ for target practice 200-300 rounds to break in the gun and make sure there are no problems. Best deal I've found for FMJ is $9.47 per 50-round box of Federal Premium 115-grain at Wal Mart. Check around and you can usually find some.

Then carry JHP in the gun and be sure to cycle at leas a dozen or so of the brand/type/weight you plan to carry to be sure they cycle well and are accurate. My Walther PPS 9mm so far will cycle anything, but it's a bit picky as far as accuracy, preferring Hornady and Speer and not liking Federal as much.

BTW, I just recently tested expansion of about 6 different 9mm JHP rounds. See results here: http://www.texaschlforum.com/viewtopic. ... =+milk+jug" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also, if you're interested, I'm selling the Federal 9mm JHP that doesn't perform well in my particular gun. I've talked with a few folks at the range who say this ammo performs very well in Glocks but both my Glocks are .40 so I have no hands-on experience. http://www.texaschlforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=32870" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hornady Critical defence for carry, wolf steel case junk for practice. Both feed flawlessly in my P89.

I carry Hornady Critical Defense.

I'm generally shooting range/target grade Federal 115 gr or Winchester White Box (WWB) 115gr. They both feed just fine through my 9mm's and are generally available at Wally World.

Carrying a 9mm for your primary CCW makes a world of difference come ammo cost and availability for plenty of range/practice time.

I carry Remington 147gr JHP in my Beretta 92F and SIG P226. For break in I like the inexpensive FMJ 115gr; Winchester White Box, UMC (Winchester) bulk packs, American Eagle. If I'm going to shoot all day long I'll even shoot the steel case Wolf ammo 'cause it's cheap (but stinky), then I definitely clean my gun.
