Ordered my CHL packet today

Post by tubular031 »

I filled out the stuff on the DPS site and paid my fee. Once it gets here Ill get in one of the classes and hopefully be on my way to getting my CHL! I love texas. I use to live in California and they hate guns out there!

Now to my question. The DPS site was asking about were I lived in the last 5 years. July will be 3 years since I permanently moved to Texas. For the 1 year before that I owned my house in Texas but bounced between California and Texas just about weekly (yes a year of ping pong really really sucked!) I answered the question on the site saying my residence was Texas based on the time I moved here for good. How does DPS verify this information? Will they wonder why I bought my house and then a year later actually moved in? I have nothing to hide. We were in the process of moving my department to Texas and it took much longer then we thought it would.

I doubt DPS will have much concern about what you listed as long as there are no voids in your whereabouts for the past 5 years.

when you get your packet in the mail it will have a print out with the information you provided with columns to the right to make corrections.
I suggest you do as they say and give the last five years.ie... 3 years Texas and the other prior address in california with dates.Nothing hard about it
and you are being truthful. What about employment? 3 in Texas and ?

Congratulations, I can remember escaping CA just a few years back. I tried to buy a gun there but they gave me such a hard time I gave up. When I got to Texas and after the waiting period I went to the gun store and said I'll take that one and that one. No hassle. :woohoo Freedom.
I also remember waiting for my CHL, waiting for the mail man each day. When it finally came I think I did a few cartwheels.

I have worked for the same company for almost 7 years. its that time when we were between texas and california that worries me with employment and housing. How will they know? maybe the day I got my tx drivers license? I dont remember when that was, some time in that year where I was half here and half there. I gave the address and aprox dates. I dont know how they will verrify. Or maybe they will look at the day I changed my w2 to my texas address. I did that right after closing on my house since tx does not pay state tax. but I had my ca license for a few months after that.... Dang I hope I dont get rejected because of this.

It still trips me out to walk into the store or gun show, fill out a 1 page form without my SS number and leave with a gun. I had to wait 30 days to pick up my gun after paying in CA. stupid CA! :txflag:

Hi tubular031, and welcome to the forum! Glad to have you with us! :tiphat:

As you can tell, there's a wealth of information here at your fingertips, and a wonderful bunch of guys & gals to help you on your journey, and get to know.

I totally agree with texjames in listing at LEAST the previous 5 years residence addresses, and suggest you do so. What DPS likes to see is "full disclosure"....the good, the bad, and the ugly.

All you need to do is make the corrections on the right half of the computer generated personal history stuff. I applied online as well and spotted 2 errors that weren't absolutely, 100% perfectly correct, and made the corrections.

lets see about 1986 moved into the house in california and lived there till I moved to texas in 2007. I am just worried about the date. they might see me moving based on the different things that happened during that year as I converted my life to texas. I guess we will find out...

Totally agree. Give your best estimate. The operative term is 'full disclosure'. They WILL find out. If you are totally up front with them, they have no recourse but to approve you. Texas is a "Shall Issue" State. :txflag:

and as Elgato told us in our class, make sure there are no missing dates, like you stopped here in May and started here in August, what happened to June/July.
