Guys,

I've Googled everything and I can't find an answer. What does the little loopy thing on the base of some revolvers do? None of my guns have one, so I've no idea what it's about. What I mean is the loop that looks like a screw eye that swivels at the base of some revolvers. A key chain?

Do you mean the lanyard loop?

If it is at the base of the grip, a lanyard loop to help retain your gun if dropped.

It's been my impression watching movies
about WWI and WWII that the British officers
always seem to have a long tether attached to
their pistols' lanyard loops.

But Americans using 1911's don't seem to use
their lanyard loops.

When the Colt M1911 was issued to U.S. troops in WWI, all 1911's had lanyard rings.

I used a dummy cord ... err ... lanyard on my M1911A1 during my Army career.

I used the lanyard on my M9 in Afghanistan because I was always out in crowds of civilians. The kids would grab anything and everything that they could and take-off running. I didn't want my weapon to be one of them...

We were having an Admiral's inspection on my ship, and I was POIC of the Honor Guard, so (this time) I carried a 1911 in a white gear holster, complete with a personally hand made braided lanyard. The Admiral approached and the CPOIC did his presentation and then came my turn. I announced "Honor Guard - - -Inspection - - - Arms!" and away we went.

I pulled my faithful and carefully prepared 1911 from the holster, ejected the magazine into my other hand, and as I stowed it, the little clip on the end of the lanyard attached to the loop, broke off and hit the deck - "ting ting ting"

As I continued, staring straight ahead as protocol dictates, and the sailor next to me waited for his cue, my reinserting the magazine and reholstering, to start his inspection move, triggering a rolling silent inspection which we had practiced down to perfection, as I did this, the Admiral missed it all.

He bent down and found and picked up the offending part, and handed it back to me, and went on his merry way, completely oblivious to the perfection that had gone unnoticed while he scoured the deck for the clip off my lanyard.

The Captain said we did a pretty good job.

A few minutes later it was announced that President Eisenhower had died and the rest of the inspection was canceled, so we never even knew if we got a mark.
