Dolly goes pop
I remember this headline some 30 years ago from an article talking about the singer moving from country to pop music. Looks like the phrase could take on a very different meaning in the near future;

Years ago, while undergoing my initial TSA training, I mentioned this possibility. Everyone thought I was kidding, probably because of the way I put it: Any woman willing to blow herself up, would probably be willing to inflate herself to do so.
It was actually my opinion that all manner of body modifications could and would be used, including a fake pregnant belly; actually explosives implanted under the skin.

So now when a woman goes to the plastic surgen for breast implants he will ask her, which ones do you want, the saline implants , the silicon implants or the C-4 implants ?

The baby's belly was packed with Semtex?AndyC wrote:During the South African bushwar in Southwest Africa (now Namibia) and Angola during the mid-60s-late 80s, fighting against the Russians, marxist Cubans, the MPLA (Angolan government party) and SWAPO (South West African Peoples' Organization), our guys would catch women carrying babies on their back, whose bellies were packed with Semtex.
It was a nasty, nasty war - so explosive boobs don't surprise me.

It sounds like the logical next step after the underwear bomb. I wondered when AQ would start borrowing tactics like internal payloads from their drug smuggler buddies.

This is why we can never defeat people who are willing to kill themselves in pursuit of their goal. We also keep fighting the last threat, not the next one. I suppose it says well of many Americans that they can't even conceive of such evil ideas, but it's maddening that the people ostensibly in charge of preventing further attacks have such inside-the-box mindsets.jimlongley wrote:Years ago, while undergoing my initial TSA training, I mentioned this possibility. Plenty of the poeple I worked with back then COULD conceive of the evil ideas. We had some who had been there, much like Andy, and laid off telecomm techies (who had been thinking up such things to use against their old companies, even if only as an exercise in feel good imagination) and some who just didn't think in terms of practicality, but it was up the chain of command that always locked us in the box.chabouk wrote: I suppose it says well of many Americans that they can't even conceive of such evil ideas, but it's maddening that the people ostensibly in charge of preventing further attacks have such inside-the-box mindsets.
Shoe bombs and underwear bombs were mentioned, and dismissed as impractical and such, and they turned into reality. As was said, someone willing to blow themselves to smithereens is not going to be particularly concerned with how it is done. This was apparantly beyond the imagination of those above us.

Think about all the other bits someone can do without for a week; gallbladder, spleen, etc. As long as they have time to recover from the surgery and get to the target, there are a lot of things that could be replaced with explosives. Wire an implanted pacemaker to the detonator, and the final failsafe (faildangerous?) is that it lights off everything when the bad guy's heart stops.bayouhazard wrote:It sounds like the logical next step after the underwear bomb. It's just not practical to try to screen for people who want to die.

We can defeat people who are willing to kill themselves in pursuit of their goal, just witness Imperial Japan and their kamikazes.chabouk wrote:This is why we can never defeat people who are willing to kill themselves in pursuit of their goal. I wonder more if we can defeat people who are willing to kill their own children in pursuit of their goal.
