Question about CHL renewal

I know, as of now, the CHL is good for 4 years. I have also heard that you can stretch it to 5 depending on your birthday. How does that work? I should be receiving mine this week :D, plus my b-day is this Friday the 17. Do I fall into the extra year scenario?

If you are receiving it this week then it's already been issued. If it was issued, say, right after your birthday, it would be good for 5 years effectively. The way it works is it's good for 4 years from issue date plus the rest of the year up until your birthday.

Looks like all of you emails worked. They made sure and got it to you 2 days before your birthday. Now you are good for 4 years and 2 days. If they would have waited 3 days, it would be good for 4 years 364 days. Be careful what you wish for. 8)

Of course, if Gov. Perry either signs or allows to go into law unsigned, HB225, the ALL of them will be good for five years, after September 1st.

Makes an interesting situation for people like my wife, who fall into the "need to renew now before the law passes" group. My wife's CHL expires 09/14 so she needed to do her renewal within the six months preceding the expiration, which she did in April to make sure it was done in plenty of time.

The quandary is: does this mean that her CHL will not really expire until 09/14/06 and she paid for and attended the class for "nothing" and will have to do it again next year; or does it mean that her CHL expires/renews as scheduled? If her CHL is extended to '06 and mine changes to a five year expiring in '10, then we will be out of cycle from each other when hers expirse next in '11.

And we did so enjoy taking the class together, especially when she outshot me, and the rest of the class but one, by firing a perfect score.

I don't understand Jim, what is the expiration date on the license? That is when it expires.

If she renews AFTER the law changes, then she will get a 5 year license. They will not extend any currently issued ones past the expiration date.

Unfortunately, HB225 also states "SECTION 5. This Act applies only to a license renewed on or after September 1, 2005."

My wife's renews 09/14/05.

So does this mean that mine, which should be in the mail, is only good for four years this renewal, and then five the next, while my wife's is good for five when it renews, or does it get extended to five before it renews, I still don't understand.

It is my understanding that the expiration date, thus the renewal date, is the expiration date on the CHL; i.e. your birth date. It is also my understanding that DPS's position on this issue is the CHL is "issued" on the date of expiration, regardless when the CHL is printed, mailed, or received by the licenseholder. This is a very important point considering our NICS exemption.

I know what the statute reads, but I'm not sure how it will be implimented.

That's just the point I was trying to make. I really hate confusing legislation, even when it's favorable.

Well, I got my CHL on the 06-21-2005 and the expiration date is 6-17-2010 so that just about makes mine good for 5 years! :D

I presume this is your first CHL and June 17th is your birthday? If so, you timed that perfectly to get almost 5 years on your first license, instead of 4+ years!
