At least 30 residents of El Porvenir, located about four miles from the Texas border town of Fort Hancock, have crossed into the U.S. and asked for political asylum, telling authorities that they fear for their lives.

Residents of a small Mexican border town under siege by at least one of the country’s most notorious drug cartels are fleeing into a tiny Texas community, which is on high alert and preparing for a surge of illegal immigrants should a street battle break out with another cartel – or if gunmen begin carrying out a threat to start killing the town’s children.

At least 30 residents of El Porvenir, located about four miles from the Texas border town of Fort Hancock, have crossed into the U.S. and asked for political asylum, telling authorities that they fear for their lives. Fort Hancock officials tell FoxNews.com that they consider the situation serious.

“We just got word that the cartel has threatened to kill children in schools across the border unless parents paid $5000 pesos,” said Mike Doyle, chief deputy sheriff of Hudspeth County. And that time might come sooner than later. Schools Superintendent Jose Franco said word has spread that everyone in the Mexican town must stay indoors while members of rival cartels prepare for a shootout.

Hudspeth County, Texas is the largely rural county which is
directly east of El Paso County. It is the county which contains
Fort Hancock.

The Hudspeth County Sheriff's Department recently had a meeting
with area citizens. Due to a high probability of Mexican drug gangs
bringing violence to the Texas side of the border, the LEO's encouraged
all Americans that would be working in their fields, to arm themselves
against the threat.

My thoughts and prayers go out to forum member karder (El Paso), any
other forum members out that way, and all citizens - that none of this
violence comes to pass.

Texas is also having a problem with a Mexican Navy helicopter which has
violated Texas airspace over Zapata County, Texas.
1. Over Falcon Lake, which has shoreline on both the Mexican and Texas sides.
2. Over US Highway 83 between the town of Zapata and the City of Laredo.

US authorities initially denied that this had happened. When photos were provided,
the US authorities came up with a fishy excuse that their radar hadn't been working
properly. Whatever.

Tacticool, you make a very good point about absolute statements. I would drop the post-1986 machine guns since there are several very violent criminal organizations that will sell those to you if you want them.

And to argue in the other posters side, the reason leaded gasoline, Cuban cigars, and DDT did not create this organization is that there is a fundamental difference in these prohibitions (including the machine guns). They were all only partial with other acceptable substitutes on the market to replace them. if they tried to ban all guns, it would be a very violent black market very quickly, IMHO.

Yes, there is a definite black market for machine guns, but not Post-86, because suppliers seek cheap sources, and the investors and speculators control the post-86 supply. Plus, any hack with common tools and internet access can create an illegal machine gun from most semi-autos. So, there is adequate supply for the demand in illegal machine guns. There is inadequate supply in the legal market, which is why prices have skyrocketed, but the legal market can't easily turn to illegal sources, because they want to stay law-abiding. So, there is no consumer demand for alternatives. The example fails.

There is no serious consumer demand for DDT, leaded gasoline, or Cuban cigars, so the examples fail.

How about pseudoephedrine? Oxycontin? Ritalin?

Seriously, the conditions along the Texas-Mexico border (as well as the entire Mexican border) is at a critical point - 'spill over' into Texas is just a matter of when - not if.
Everyone needs to be very careful and keep your situational awareness on ORANGE-RED!

My wife and I used to go to El Porvenir quite often to do missions work when I was in Marfa. Still know a couple of folks who live in Ft. Hancock. I am not at all convinced that we can keep this stuff out of Texas with a defensive posture. As many of you know, it is a huge, rugged area and would take large numbers of troops to fight a defensive war.
