is letting the gun get dry bad for it?
It could be, depends on the gun. Most modern firearms just need a "little" bit of oil. In fact, some manufacturers let you know in the manual or on their webiste, exactly how much and where to put it.

I used to be a habitual over oiler. If you took one of my 1911's out and fired it you'd have to clean your safety glasses after the first mag. I used moto-cross tear aways on my specs to save time. ;-)

I clean my carry gun when it looks dirty. No pre-determined schedule. If I see lint or other debris accumulating on the weapon from my clothing then I'll clean it. Oil doesn't just "dry up" internally so cleaning it usually just means blowing out the nooks and crannies with compressed air and wiping the gun down with a silicone reel cloth.
If I've fired it then I'll do the normal cleaning.

Hope that helps.
I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

Same as HV. When I arm up of morning part of that is general look at the weapon. If it shows ANY lint or fuz I give it a wipe down. At end of day when disarming if any of the above or sweat is evident at evening, I wipe it down. Always have a clean rag in the bottom drawer of chest. Very light oil if needed. I too was a "too heave oiler" in my younger days. Never had to clean my glasses though HV.
Check the wife's on a weekly basis & make sure I look at Mom's every week.

I do the quick clean routine every couple weeks.

PS: T-Shirt dust in the eyes is a killer, be careful with the compressed air!

When I run mine thru the dish washer I found that Jet Dry helps with the spots.....

I crack me up sometimes... Seriously, I seem to go about a month and pull it down and clean it lightly, if I don't shoot it.

I inspect my weapon daily. Each evening before bed, I take a good stiff brush to my carry gun's rear sight to get the underarm deodorant off of it! I have the best smelling gun in town.

I dunno that letting my gun get dry is "bad".
I started using a high quality lithium grease on the sliding parts. It doesn't migrate much.

I use a can of generic aerosol brake parts cleaner on the weapons after a range session. Just hose things down, light oil, smear a little grease, wipe out the barrels.

They really don't need anymore than that.

I inspect daily before carry, and every evening it gets a wipe down with a silicone gun and reel cloth.

I shoot too often to worry about in-between cleanings.
