It could be, depends on the gun. Most modern firearms just need a "little" bit of oil. In fact, some manufacturers let you know in the manual or on their webiste, exactly how much and where to put it.is letting the gun get dry bad for it?
I used to be a habitual over oiler. If you took one of my 1911's out and fired it you'd have to clean your safety glasses after the first mag. I used moto-cross tear aways on my specs to save time.

I clean my carry gun when it looks dirty. No pre-determined schedule. If I see lint or other debris accumulating on the weapon from my clothing then I'll clean it. Oil doesn't just "dry up" internally so cleaning it usually just means blowing out the nooks and crannies with compressed air and wiping the gun down with a silicone reel cloth.
If I've fired it then I'll do the normal cleaning.
