"Cool" gun for a 16 year old

You may remember about a year ago, I had taken my step son and uncle to the range and they both fell in love with it! Especially my step son. He wasn't a "gunny" like I am, but he's on his way.

Anyways, we were at the range one day, and he said to me "Is that an MP5?" which knocked my socks off. The guy down the lane from us had one of those GSG MP5 clones.

Turns out, he knew it from one of the video games he plays, Call of Duty.

Which brings me to my question. I am not a gamer, so I have no idea. I'd like to start thinking about his 17th birthday gift, and I'd like to get him his own firearm that has a certain "cool" factor, just for fun. I'd like to keep it at a .22, because he enjoys that the most (he loves my 10/22 and 22/45). The GSG is cool, but seems overpriced. Maybe a 10/22 with a replacement stock that resembles something from a video game (Halo is another one he mentioned to me).

Anyways, I am lost on other ideas. Does anyone know of something that would fit this bill?

i am a gamer, and play alot of call of duty and i think that the GSG is worth i, i have one myself and love it, its accurate, and not to mention it looks cool

I absolutely love my S&W M&P 15-22.

Upsides are:
I've shot >2500 round through it so far with very few problems at all(almost all problems were due to defective ammo).
It eats whatever I give it without complaint.
It's accurate.
It looks cool.
It has accessory rails so I can make it look cooler if I so desire, or would the term be tacti-cooler?(not that I'll be adding to it other than the scope I put on it).
Takes down just like my AR-15 and works just like it too.
It's FUN to shoot!
It's fairly light.

Downsides are:
Only 25 or 10 round magazines available.
No autoloader for those magazines available yet(that I know of).
I'm really trying to think of more downsides, but I can't come up with anything...

If he likes your 10/22, why not get a Ruger SR-22. Same 10/22 action but in a tacticool package. Plus, uses the same mags as a 10/22 so mags are cheap and plentiful. It can also be upgraded with better internals.

This forum rocks. I guess I am used to other forums, I expected this to be a mini flame fest. I expected responses like "guns are practical, not "cool"" and "you should look for usability before appearance". You guys are awesome though, so instead I see helpful responses with suggestions! I didnt know about 1/2 of the options you suggested, nice!

I think the GSG is worth the money. It feels a little cheap/light weight but it is accurate and reliable. I think for a first gun it is great. The only other type I could think the recommend would maybe the Walther G22 rifle or like other have said go the modified 10/22 way. Or one of the AR22 variants. A good .22 pistol is always tons of fun though.

what about a slightly different direction and get a nice .22 rifle set up for some serious target shooting that looks "tacti-cool" like a sniper rifle. Seems you could do some "sniper-cool" add-ons to a basic 10/22 to make it look sweet. I think most of the free-floating target-style stocks will allow the standard size sporter barrel to be used until he saves up his money to buy a thicker bull barrel. S&W M&P-15/22 uses a proprietary mag. The Colt/Umarex .22 does too.

The linked BDM mag can be used with a .22 conversion or dedicated .22 upper.

I'm going the dedicated .22 upper route with my AR-15 (just got it this week, and found out I need to replace my hammer for it to work) but I can see the wisdom in getting a dedicated gun like the S&W (I haven't heard good things about the Colt). For the same price it's another gun in the safe, and it is an especially good idea in situations like this so the boy can have his own gun.
