Guys,
The hypocrisy of sex, drug, alcohol, and sex education have been pointed out (many times) in the comment section of this article, but what amazes me is when a person has an irrational fear or hatred of something, instead of keeping quiet they say the silliest things; case and point Ms. Washington and her child who's somehow never even heard of a gun.

I'd be willing to bet Mrs Washington $100 that her daughter does, indeed, know what a gun is.Embalmo wrote: case and point Ms. Washington and her child who's somehow never even heard of a gun.
If not, then they must not have a TV or a Radio or a computer in their home, and her daughter must not have any friends or be allowed to go outside and talk to anyone else.
She also must not have been allowed to read any books, newspapers or magazines.
If her daughter truly does not know what a gun is, Mrs. Washington should be arrested for child abuse for keeping her locked up in her room for her entire life...
IANAL, YMMV, ITEOTWAWKI and all that.

I'm guessing that Ms. Washington is sort who won't blame individuals for gun crime, so the blame must fall onto an inanimate object, or the evil pigs who produce and advocate these evil inanimate objects. Well, as long a perpetrator of gun crime is blameless in the eyes of the community, the entire community will be vindicated and free to maintain its current course.

I don't understand how in the world the idea of gun safety classes for children has nay-sayers.
The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere. -Thomas Jefferson

Yep and the gun course teaches abstinence for children, not a courtesy we could expect from the advocates of sex education. Of course can you imagine if the liberals actually liked guns and gave the children some sort of perverted view of gun handling/safety and then we would have to protest, "Gun safety should should be taught in the home!" Bottom line: Gun safety is always a good thing to teach.karl wrote:I don't understand how in the world the idea of gun safety classes for children has nay-sayers.

Remember this firearms safety course a few years ago:

Even the so-called experts are loons.

Re: Firearm safety taught in Virginia elementary
I'm surprised to see this coming from the area of Virginia where this station is located. I'm a native of the area, and it is in general a very conservative farming area (my brothers' high school had a "Drive your tractor to school" day). There are more liberal pockets--the city that this woman is from is heavily dependent on a large state university there (the town grows from 30,000 to 45,000 when school is in session).
They already teach hunter's ed in schools (which in Virginia actually qualifies for the training requirement for a Concealed Handgun Permit), so I'm not sure why gun safety training would be controversial.
Actually, it probably isn't controversial. The station probably wanted to present some false sense of "balance" so they went out and dug up some idiot who would give them an anti-gun soundbite. I don't know how someone could be against gun safety training, especially something like Eddie Eagle (Stop. Don't touch. Get an adult.).
