wife and i did some training...

Post by Rescue1 »

at the range on friday.

a little background... wife has grown up around guns but has never fired a pistol or showed much interest in it. she has also held the idea that bad things don't happen to good people. her reaction to my CHL has always been, whatever  . but... recently she has started selling jewlery as a hobby. one of those things where she goes to people's houses and puts on a show. well it's getting her out of her suburband comfort zone. many times recently she has been across town late at night in unfamilure territory, and it's made her uncomfortable. so she asked about a CHL for herself, and i told her a training class was in order first.

there is a female instructor at thunder gun range in conroe. Donna, she's an awesome lady, and my wife took a one on one class with her on friday. she rented a glock 19 and wow!! she was awesome, very accurate, i could hear her laughing over the wall. (i was on the otherside taking a class from Donna's husband Steve. also a great instructor :thumbs2: ) she had a great time and has been talking about it nonstop since then.

soo... part of our mother's day pampering involved going to academy to shake hands with a few pistols. looks like the bersa is in our near future. they have a bersa as a rental at the range so we are planning on doing that for her next class.

anyway, to sum up, if you would like to have some live fire training with top notch instructors for his and hers, where you can learn to draw and fire from your holster, then please look into this class. class is only $25 and is 3 hrs long. i'm going back in two weeks, i was able to practice not only drawing from my holster but also moving off the X (well only backpedaling so far) and multiple shots while keeping a good sight picture.

it was the start to a great weekend!

Fantastic report Rescue 1!! And everyone on this forum will agree with you that Donna & Steve are excellent instructors.

Are you aware that they are this forum's very own CompVest & SVRA.....Moderators on this forum? :tiphat: :tiphat:

Howdy Tomball neighbor. ;-)

IMO the Bersa is a great value.
May I assume that you are referring to the Thunder .380? ..if so, take a look at this review

howdy good to see other tomballonians, tomballites, tomball...aw whatever we are on here.

yeah acadamey has it for $279

i've shot it before and i really liked it but i was hoping she would find somthing in a 9mm. mainly for selfish reasons, (i want a 9mm) even though they had a good selection of compact 9mm she wouldn't bite. probably run to tomball pawn just to make sure there isn't another one she would feel comfortable with. either way we'll try before we buy.

I have thought of a Bersa .380 for more of a pocket carry, or lighter carry if I am walking the dogs around the neighborhood or even at the dog park.
However the thing that still worries me, is availability of ammo.
I was in Academy (Webster) this weekend, and we were talking about the ammo, they said that it is still extremely tight. So that has to be a thought, if I have a weapon that I cannot shoot, what good is it to me?

The Bersa will fit into a pocket... barely. The grip length can be problematic when drawing from a pocket though.
A Ruger LCP or a small frame revolver would be better suited for puttering around the neighborhood IMO.

i agree, the LCP is a better pocket gun. the only problem i have with the bersa is, it's a full size 380. meaning you don't capitalize on the benefit of haveing a smaller caliber. it is however very comfortable to shoot/hold. i knew she would like that one. i was hoping for either the taurus slim or the ruger sr9 but she didn't like them. same relitive size but a jump up in caliber.

i don't want to cause a run on the store but i was told by the academy guy that .380 for him is no problem. while i was there i was staring at a full shelf of the stuff.

16.99 a box of 50 white box. but they had it. hollow points too.

either way it will be her gun and it has to be what she wants. i really liked the ruger sr9c though.

I've been hearing good things about the SR9.
I haven't held one yet but If I was in the market for a compact 9mm, that would be one I'd look at. ;-)

The Bersa is a good choice. I have several ladies that them. They perform and are quite accurate.

Tom from GunTalk talked about the SR9 this past Sunday and commented that Ruger had made some changes to the trigger that were just incredible as contrasted with the previous generation. The compact SR9 looks to be roughly the same as the Bersa Thunder (size wise) too. Of course, that might be due to my bi-focals "rlol"

Quahog I think it is time to schedule a visit to you eye doctor! :biggrinjester:

I have both the Bersa Thunder and SR9c and I can tell you that the Ruger is noticably larger. They are about the same height but the Bersa is about an inch shorter and about 2/16 to 3/16 inch narrower. Another difference is that I don't have to check if any of the Ruger's screws came loose after a trip to the range. I love my Bersa and it has generally been reliable, but I have to acknowledge that it requires a bit more TLC than any of my other guns.
