Smith & Wesson introduces new handguns

Looks like S&W R&D has been at it again.

They chopped up the M&P15-22 into a 51 ounce pistol called the M&P15-22P:

I think I'd stay with the rifle, as this one's MSRP is $585

And they have a new line of self-defense pistols in the SD9 and SD40:

I wonder if these are replacements/upgrades to the Sigma - MSRP is $429

If they had any sense at all they would remove the locks from all their current revolvers!

Or, at least offer special runs (like in the past) of some models without the locks (like the 642-1 I was able to buy as a special run).

Looks very tacticool, but I'm wondering what useful purpose a semi auto machine pistol in .22LR serves? I'm relatively new to shooting, so this isn't intended to start a caliber flame war. I'm just wondering, because I think of .22 LR as a fun round to plink with and to teach kids how to shoot, but don't understand what grown-ups would do with it other that target fun. Educate me, please!

I don't think any of the AR pistols are meant as anything other than a plinking toy.

.22lr makes more sense to me than an actual rifle caliber in this kind of gun because of (1) decreased ammo cost and (2) reduced recoil.

Unlike my sig line, I don't know how that would ever be useful, and I don't want one, either.

Sure, reduced recoil (or none - it weighs 4.25 pounds, after all) and cheap plinking, but I don't know how you'd get a good sight picture with that thing. It looks positively...unwieldy. I'm sure there are lots of people who will buy one for the cool factor, but with the cost nearly the same as (or more than!) a M&P15-22 rifle, I just don't see the draw, and I'm even considering buying one of the rifles!
