You don't have a MP3/WAV of that first phone call, do you?

Re: Wrecked
This was cassette tape days, with recorders almost as big as today's VCRs, even if I had the tapes, which stayed with the repeater owner, without that recorder/player I couldn't get a good playback, I reduced the size of the drive capstan to slow the tape speed down, and I just used "parts of convenience" from my junk box to do it, so I don't even know what the tape speed would be. It would be funny though, even if it would teach our ten year old daughters thing.Grog wrote:If that were me, I'd stop talking on the radio![]()

Glad you are okay but I am sure you will feel the effects of that bump pretty soon. They sure don't make the vehicles like they used to. Plastic and aluminum foil; both wrinkle up pretty easy.

Re: Wrecked
I actually feel better today than I expected to. I have a couple of sore neck muscles, and the back of my head hurts a little bit from where I hit the head rest.
Honestly I'm not sure how much I had slowed down. The speed limit there is 65, but most people drive closer to 70 through there. I wouldn't doubt she was in that range. I'll have to wait until I get the report to find out more.

If it hadn't been for the headrest, my head would have probably busted the back glass. I'm glad it was there.AndyC wrote:Glad you're ok - did you have head-restraints which saved you from too much whiplash? Just curious, because nowadays I won't buy a vehicle without those (a learning experience from my 20s :D ).

That is correct, they don't make cars like they used to -- cars are designed to "wrinkle" up and leave the people intact. It used to be the other way around -- the people got "wrinkled up."seniorshooteress wrote:...They sure don't make the vehicles like they used to. I have helped a number of people immediately after accidents, and have been amazed at some of the smashed up cars they walk out of. Nothing scientific, but it has been my observation that if you a) stay in the seat (instead of ricocheting around inside the vehicle or getting ejected -i.e. wear your seatbelts), and b) avoid hitting your head, you generally be in much better shape after the smashing sounds stop.
p.s. and vehicles with more mass generally treat their occupants better. Kinda rough on the occupants of the smaller vehicle sometimes.

Yep. Take a look at this video, done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. They crashed a 1959 Bel-Air and a 2009 Malibu to see how each car would fare. Not even close. The Malibu driver would have probably walked away, the Bel-Air driver would have been killed instantly.seniorshooteress wrote:Glad you are okay but I am sure you will feel the effects of that bump pretty soon. There was a big write-up somewhere last year on them finding the right car for the test - one sound enough for the test, but not a "collector's car" either. As much as I appreciate the land-yachts of yore, I prefer the crumple zones of modern vehicles very much, as they once saved me from a vicious case of whiplash - or worse.

WOW!!!
I'm not surprised about the Belaire driver, but I am surprised about the car itself. I thought it would have held up better.
