Texas to Nebraska

Post by Pinkycatcher »

So I'm possibly about to take the long ride from DFW to Omaha, Nebraska on my bike this Saturday (depending on if TCU wins Friday) and am stuck on whether to carry or not. We have reciprocity with all three states I'll pass through (OK, Kansas) but I don't have a lock box on my bike, and I can't carry into the event in Nebraska (Darn you scholastic events!!!)

I do have to make frequent stops (130 miles or so) for gas, and probably will be riding partially at night, so would much rather carry because I'm not the biggest guy and don't like wandering into uncharted waters without backup. I also have figured that realistically there isn't that large a chance of someone actually stealing out of my bike. But is that risk worth it? I'd like to know your thoughts, not just a I would(n't) carry.

And if you have long bike riding experience, I would always welcome that too!

(Also if I had the option of locking it up in a friends car who is up there, would it then be worth it? If I flew in?)

*edit* As a reminder, Omaha is on the border with Iowa which does not honor any permits from any other states, there is a very small chance I will cross the border, and of course will follow the laws on carrying. (The border city is very small, and I don't actually think much will happen that I would be involved in over there.

If you ride and you have a friend with a 4 wheeler, leave it in his vehicle. You may also check with a local range and see if they have storage facilities. Are you going to get a room? If so the hotel should have a safe you could leave it in.

There are any number of ways to handle it but I would not leave it unsecure on the bike. Not worried as much about other bikers but others that like to "look through things"
I have never lost anything around a lot of bikers and I leave helment, gloves , glasses and etc. out. However, I will not leave them unsecure (I have hard bags) in a regular parking lot due to the thefts that are occuring.

Good luck and GO TCU

Thanks! Luckily I've got some friends now who are driving up there, so I'll be able to carry in the car, but I definitely need to get a locking case for my bike for future travels (of which I'm sure there will be many)
