WTB First 22 for son...prefer Savage CUB

Post by TexDotCom »

I really like the Savage Arms CUB at Cabela's but wanted to ask around here first to see if anyone has a single-shot, kid-friendly .22 LR they'd sell in an FTF here in the DFW area. I live in Richardson and work in downtown Dallas. Feel free to respond in this thread, via PM, or the e-mail in my profile. I told my son I'd take him to the range when he turned 10 (next month) and it would be nice if he had his own little plinker to work with there.

Thanks.

How fun! My brother just bought his young son a 1st .22 rifle. He was looking at these:

http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/ ... 2/915y.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://cz-usa.com/products/view/cz-452-scout/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Good luck with whatever .22 you purchase. I had a wonderful time teaching my own kids
(when they were very young) about shooting, firearms, firearm safety and hunting. Great way
to keep the communication lines open during the teen years and a common bond that lasts a
lifetime.

Thanks for the links, and the encouragement, gemini. I want very much for the kiddo to learn about and even appreciate firearms, but my SA XD 45 and my wife's Ruger SP101 in .357 mag or .38 special are probably a little much to start him with!

Ithica made a ok .22 rifle at one time. they were nto to bad.

Have you give any thought to a bolt action like a ruger 77/22 it would be something that can grow with him?

Kudos on taking your son shooting. I'm sure whichever .22 you decide on he'll love it.

My boy is only 18 months, but I can't wait for the first day I take him and his sister (4 years old) shooting. Thinking I might be able to start her on a BB gun by next year (well supervised of course).

Let me tell you something guys...

I bought my Son his first 22l rifle. I have done alot of reasurch and I found it to be the best in Company and Quality. I found an ALL American Made HENRY Youth Bolt 22 Long, Short in Stainless. He has put about 1500 Rounds out of it and it still looks NEW. It is a Very well built Rifle and the best part it's all American Made / Assembled. :txflag:

Customer Service is Outstanding. Only a hand full of companies still do this...

Thanks to all who made suggestions. Your support and encouragement is greatly appreciated.

Regarding the Ruger 77/22...the kiddo is still a little guy so I'm concerned about length and weight. Also, the MSRP is way over what I want to spend on a first-time plinker purchase. That rifle does look like something I might want to get myself for my birthday, though!

Thanks again. Range time is next weekend!

I picked up a used .22 Marlin at a pawn shop for $40, it was a little dirty but cleaned it right up. Also picked up a old 22 revolver for $60 at a different pawn shop last year. I have put both of those weapons to well use teaching youths (my kids and several other friends kids). If you looking for something cheap check around at the pawn shops.

Great suggestion. Thanks very much. I will probably also take him to the Mesquite Gun Show this weekend so we can look for the perfect fit there.
