I have come home at the end of the day and unholstered my 1911, only to find that somewhere along the day's journey, the thumb safety got switched off.

This is one reason I have never opted for an extended safety lever on my Hi-Power. I've never had that happen with the little stock nubby one that comes with it. With the 1911 you do have the grip safety that would need to be disengaged for the gun to fire, but I agree that I would not put it under the pillow, nonetheless.

I *have* had that the safety disengage when I carried my PA-63, but there's not much to be concerned about with that gun in a proper holster and a 20# DA trigger. I've moved to carrying that gun with the safety disengaged anyway, in the rare event that it gets carried. A good half or more of the people I take to the range can't pull that trigger in DA to fire it anyway, and it takes a VERY deliberate trigger pull for me to fire it.

I keep mine on the nightstand as well, in the same position of placement every night.

Not for me, but it works for some people.

I've got 2 large dogs that will wake me up in time to reach for my gun(s).

My 20 lb cat slept with us for awhile last night. Would one of those things work with her?
As for the pillow, I definitely toss and turn too much to even consider it.

Nightstand/dog crate loaded with the chamber empty. Two dogs in crates in the bedroom, while the other two are loose in the rest of the house. If I ever get that Benelli semi-auto M4 shotgun it will be right next to the bed ready to go.

not for me. one night a few months ago i reached over and grabbed a hammer that was left in the room after hanging something. it woke me up when it fell and hit the floor later in the night. dont know why i grabbed it but i did. now i usually dont keep a gun within arms reach just incase it happens again.

I have always heard, and practiced, that the best method of keeping a firearm handy during sleep periods is to keep it "one deteremined move away". If you keep a semi-auto under the pillow, keep it chamber empty so that you must rack the slide. If you keep it open on the "night stand", keep it far enough out of reach that it takes a somewhat determined reach to acquire it. If you keep it on the headboard, use a headboard design with a cabinet type door. Even the night stand drawer that can be accessed without crawling off the bed will work. That one "determined" move to access the gun should give you time to be aware of what you are reaching for and give you a second or two to wake up to the situation. That one move needs to be kept as simple as possible, but still a determined move.
