MadDawg,

I was in similar situation where my wife was anti-guns and didn't want me to own any. I took it one small step at a time, and now she's even got her own CHL. The key is to slowly , but persistently, inch forward.

Dawg,
To convert anyone to anything is a slow process. (except for drugs  )

Mention it to her and then back off immediately once you feel tension.

Make a comment during a news cast about how if they'd been just able to defend themselves; don't mention gun, pepper spray or any other kind of defensive weapon like a bic (r) pin or even the edge of a credit card. Let her make those kinds of suggestions.

Watch shows like law and order where you can make defensive type of comments here and there... and not on every show. Encourage her participation by asking; "What would you have tried to do if that happend to you?"

It's obvious that you already have weapons in the house:

so bring one out every so often just to clean it so "rust won't form on it!"

It might take a person, at times, years to 'see the light', just keep hinting here and there------but don't be obsessive about it.

And I believe the corneredcat is an excellent web site. Send her a link to it.

I agree with some points that Cyphur made.

Yet, I still wanted her to understand why I am getting my CHL, and we had a few heated discussions about it. In the end we both see eachother's points

I explained all the benefits of having a CHL that I had read up on and all struck a nerve.

, and I've even had her handle the pistol and rifle a few times to get her familiar with it. Trying to debunk the "fact" that guns "just go boom" when they are played with.

Showed her the pistol I was going to buy and all the features etc, and why this was the one for me. Explained my schedule, range time, hiding place etc, and it would be part of my routine just like exercise.

It also helps that I am a HUGE proponent of muscle memory and practice, and I dry fire my weapons several times a week with snap caps - and I have managed not to shoot myself or the wall yet. That is starting to help get her more comfortable. Also her seeing me clean my weapons thoroughly I do believe has helped her be confident that I am knowledgable and confident in the proper use of the firearms and know what I am doing.

This has happened to my wife and I agree. She got to the point where she would say "do you have to handle that thing everyday." My reply was I wanted to be accurate and not drop it, if I ever had to use it.
Even a little reverse psychology would work. I told my wife if she was in public and someone punched her in the head and grab her purse, that I would run to the nearest phone and call the police.
Of course, after the evil look and few curse words, she said, " better pull that gun out, WXYZ!!!! At that point, I knew she had bought in.

We are to the point where I don't get those comments anymore and the gun is invisble to her now. Just part of the furniture in the house.
Finally on Saturday, I was getting dress and heard click, click, click in the gameroom and went to catch her dryfire my pistol.
After scoulding her doing that without any safety procedures and could have been live rounds loaded, she told me she had checked it and it was clear.

I'm impressed.

Anyway, being longwinded. BYE.

THE FOLLOWING IS CLASSIFIED FOR MEN ONLY!

i have been to the temple. i have spent many years consulting with, and learning from, the great wise one. and i learned the ways of the woman in the matter of gun ownership.

my wife hates guns. she's not a fan of them at all. i took her to shoot them once. she shot about 5 rounds, and hasn't touched one since, and probably won't touch one again.

but what i learned from the great one in the temple is something that i will share, but only if you promise to keep it a sincere secret. you cannot let women know that this is an area that we have come to understand. raise your right hand, and say "i swear on my life, that i will not reveal to any woman that we, as men, understand women and gun ownership." i'm telling you, if you say anything i'm going to be mad. then i'll have to spend 5 more years in the temple with the great wise one learning a new understanding all over again.

ok, here it is...show her that guns come in pink.

that's it. that's the secret. i bought 3 rifles one month. my wife's interest in my need to accumulate those weapons brought about many heated arguments, so i went to the temple far away, and learned. i introduced my wife to the 'pink gun'. after that, SHE suggested that we purchase two more rifles for each of my young children, because 'pink' guns were adorable.

since then, i've expanded my collection, and my wife even reminds me should i start to leave the house without a gun on me.

Disclaimer: This rig belongs to my wife

I know we have discussed this before.....but the above is testimony that I agree 100%. Pink is powerful and I didn't even have to visit the temple  I challenge you to start calling around and see how easy this color holster is to find!!!

jbirds or jbirdswife, where can I get a pink holster? I want one for IDPA.

MadDawg, I'm sort of in the same boat as you, only it's reverse gender.
My husband is very uncomfortable with the fact that I carry. His reasoning is that I'm sort of clumsy. He's not an anti; he doesn't mind them being around the house, he just doesn't think that I have enough sense not to shoot myself. (In his defense, I must admit that I have tripped over my own feet several times.)

I try to put my words into action. I try to shoot a lot. I read about guns and situations a lot. I let him see me doing this. I invite him when I venture out to do something gun-related. That helps some in my case.

In your wife's case, invite her to gun-related events where you know there will be other women. Most likely, guns are foreign to her.

I agree with the advice to ask, "What would you do?" or "What should that t.v. character/victim on news cast have done?" Those types of questions may get her thinking.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.

My wife wasn't totally opposed to guns and being prior military, I had the opportunity to have her around them alot. She never wanted to handle them though and was opposed to shooting them. It wasn't until after I bought her a Beretta 87T .22cal and did the slide lettering in pink, that she decided she would learn a little. I would ask her if she would like to hold it or learn anything about it. Slowly, she came around and held it.....then asked a question or two. Then, one day, I took her to the range and loaded her mags for her as she shot 200 rounds of .22! Me with sore fingers and her with a big grin. She had all her shots in a line from 6 o'clock up to 12. She pushed/pulled a little, but they were centered side to side. If she ever learns to settle down and control that trigger, she'll outshoot me.

Oooooooh, yeah, mention that!! That most wives outshoot their husbands. The competition is a huge attraction. Especially when you let her outshoot you and you have to take her to dinner!!

LOL.......i have to admit I bought a black pistol rug and painted it with pink fabric paint for her pistol. She was happy that I took the time to make things more "feminine" for her. She loves to go shooting now and I always take her to lunch after. (not sure if that's why she goes) But, I can't complain one bit. Now if only I could get her to shoot the 30-06 and go hunting............nah, there's just some things I prefer to do alone. ;-)

i advise against that. my daughter got some new pants for her birthday. they are camoflauge. when she saw them, she looked at me and said, "now i can go hunting with you." i smiled at her, but i knew it was just wrong. her pants were camo alright, but pink and brown camo. unless the animals are up for tea and crumpets, she's going to have to understand the difference in hunting camo, and fashion camo.

I will give these suggestions a try and see what happens. I seriously do not think I will have much luck on the involvment part but acceptance is within grasp.

Thanks,

MadDawg
