Yeah, I saw it on T.V. Hilarious.

I didn't really care for the the second half of Full Metal Jacket, and I'm not a big fan of the language. But the first half of the movie was the absolute most realistic depiction of Marine Corps BootCamp that I have ever seen portrayed in a film. It was seriously spot on. I can't even watch it without without slipping back decades in time ...

I had read somewhere that The Gunny was an extra in the film and the original actor that played his role couldn't be there so they asked if anybody could pull it off...the rest is history.

Lock and Load is a pretty entertaining show as well. The Gunny is a crazy dude.

Don't know if it that is true or rumor.

Ask Crossfire. She and Marty met the Gunny at the last SHOT show. She says he's a really nice guy with a great sense of humor. I'm sure he does, 'cause that Geico ad is funny. I've seen it on TV a number of times.

If you haven't seen it, there is a movie running on FX right now called 'Man of the House'. It stars Tommy Lee Jones as a Texas Ranger who has to guard a bunch of UT cheerleaders after they witness a murder. The movie has the Gunny in it as a Captain in the Rangers. Pretty funny movie and worth time to watch, especially is you are a UT fan.

He was the Technical Advisor for FMJ. I too loved the Boot Camp portion of the movie, especially when it showed my barracks in the background. I was 2nd Recruit Training Bn, right next to the Parade deck.
My other favorite USMC movie is "The Boys in Company C". I just love that flick, though it was about Hollywood Marines.

He was the Technical Advisor for FMJ. I too loved the Boot Camp portion of the movie, especially when it showed my barracks in the background. I was 2nd Recruit Training Bn, right next to the Parade deck.
My other favorite USMC movie is "The Boys in Company C". I just love that flick, though it was about Hollywood Marines.

I don't hold you as a lesser Marine just because you didn't have the pleasure of hoofing it over any actual mountains or hills there at Paris Island.

Correct he was the tech adviser. He was convinced he could do the job so he had a bunch of Royal Marine extra line up and he did his DI bit while people threw tennis balls and oranges at him. He never lost his place, nor repeated himself. He had the whole thing filmed and showed it to Stanley Kubrick who was impressed and gave him the role. R. Lee Ermey ad-libbed most of his lines and did most of his shots in one or two takes which is a rarity for a Kubrick film.

I bet it would be awesome to see that footage. Imagine Gunnery Sgt Hartman doing his DI tirade and some zinging an orange at him.

Being a former Marine,and VietNam vet,I thought that Full Metal Jacket was the best representaton movie of the VietNam war.I knew some Marines that could have played each character in the movie.The language in the movie was exactly the language that was used.

That movie makes me want to join the MIckey Mouse Club. The closing scene is the absolute best part of the second half.
