My gun it shoot back at me!

Post by seniorshooteress »

I recently bought a taurus 738 tcp. Took it to the range and it had a few FTE , and FTF in the first 50 rounds. On the second 50 rounds the casings kept flying back at me. One hit me in the forehead (made a nice little scratch there) more hit me on top of the head and one flew back went down the front of my shirt and now I have a burn just under my collar bone. Guess it is time to do the shoot & move stuff. Anyone else had these problems with their 738 TCP? It has misfired quite a few times pull trigger no bang, pull trigger again, goes bang. I have tried different types of ammo Winchester, Federal, Am Eagle, PMC and what T's guns and ammo loads. This gun also gets really dirty, really fast. Was the flying back at me of the casings because it was getting dirty? I liked the idea that slide locks back when empty, LCP don't, but the way this gun is misbehaving I don't trust it as my carry. I have now put over 300 rounds through this gun and still having malfunctions. Any suggestions as to what could be the problem? BTW it gets a good cleaning after every range outting. Have to clean it cause the gun is PINK and around the end of the barrel is totally black after shooting. Even the mags are dirty. I was blaming the "dirty" on the winchester ammo but it wasn't so. :confused5

At the risk of asking a silly question, have you tried contacting Taurus customer service?

Well, on a brighter side, it should be pretty easy to find the empties for reloading. :smilelol5:

Nope haven't done that yet was waiting on input from the forum experts. Does this sound like a customer service issue? Don't want to start calling and complaining till I get some opinions from fellow forum peeps.

Don't know much about that particular gun but on a 1911 the culprit is usually an extractor needing adjustment.
Best bet would probably be calling Taurus.

Edited to correct spelling..twice. :???:

:iagree: Dirty casings have no bearing on this problem.

Have you tried any other ammo besides Winchester? Maybe they used hard primers on that run. Before I sent it back, I would try a couple different brands, if you can find it.

Just put a little basked on top of your head. "rlol"

I don't know anything about that particular pistol, but you'd think it would eject brass in an arc either straight out to the side, or backward at a 45% angle, over your right shoulder. That describes pretty much all of my semi-auto pistols, from Ruger .22 to M&P .45.

ASIDE: Oddly enough, my M1A rifle throws almost all of its brass forward and to the right. When I shoot it, about 95% of the spent brass will wind up in the grass in front of the shooting bench. Even my AR15 brass sometimes gets thrown forward.

Regarding your Taurus, GunBlast.com said:
I do want to note that occasionally an empty cartridge was ejected onto the top of my head, but did not hinder my shooting at all. It might be bothersome to some shooters, but it did not bother me.

As usual I'm confused :confused5. Are you suggesting that your pistol was throwing hot brass at you because it was dirty?

Try talking nicely to it - works for plants. :biggrinjester:

The lady at thecorneredcat.com says get a hat.

Edit: Congratulations on your new "heater", madam. Whether its calling customer service, visiting a gun smith, or talking to it, I'm sure you'll get it working perfectly.

seniorshooteress, Your Taurus has a lifetime warranty, send it back and have them fix it.

A few comments all tongue in cheek. ;-)

"casings" - - - sausages have casings cartridges have cases. :nono:

"One hit me in the forehead" - - - There is an accessory you can buy that will prevent this, it is called "A Hat!" "rlol"

" one flew back went down the front of my shirt and now I have a burn just under my collar bone" - - - Another accessory made for this purpose "shirt with a collar" DPS says to button it all the way up this prevents doing the "chicken dance" :anamatedbanana with a loaded gun in your hand. A lady I know at the gun club had a hot case lodge you know where. :eek6 She always wears a crew neck or, button up shirt now. :thumbs2:

I have seen the same thing happen to a friend's wife, when hot "cases" got caught in her "brass catcher" top. :smilelol5: "rlol"

In my opinion, I think it could be the ejector needing to be stoned slightly to improve angle, or shortened. The extractor only pulls the spent case out of the chamber, the ejector ejects the case from the extractors grip. It could still be the extractor, but I would lean more the other way on this style of pistol IMHO. Either way, I would call Taurus and send it in with a specific list of your complaints about the gun. They are really good about taking care of their customers. Hope this helps :tiphat:

Good point. I hadn't thought of that.
Makes sense seeing as how the extractor and ejector work in conjunction with each other.
