Another Colt 1911 question

I got passed my grandfathers` Colt 1911 , it has alot of pitting so i took it by my local gun store that I trust. The guy I know told me that it was too pitted to reblue,chrome or even possible nickle , he suggested nickle blasting but he was`nt totally sure it would hide all the pitting.
Anyone have any suggestions? I`m just afraid I`ll messing it up means alot to me beoing my grandfathers.

Sometimes one of the worst things someone can do to an old collectible gun
is to try to do any restoration to it. It can destroy the value.

If it were me, I would leave it the way it is and treasure it as an heirloom
that has been passed down to you and that you may someday pass down to someone else.

I feel the same , but when it was looked at , he tols me it wouldnt be worth anything as for selling . It waould just be worth something to me since it was passed to me.

It was made in 1949 , goverment model , Im trying to get some pics I can post

I am pretty sure that is before they made the adjustments to the slide, frame, beavertail and hammer.

I would NOT touch that gun as that is a nice piece of history.

I was just looking at them yesterday...

Even in rough condition.

I frequent Collectors Firearms and see some of those old Colts going for big bucks.
Obviously the ones in good to great condition will fetch the highest prices, but even
some I've seen that are in the condition that you described hover around a grand.

Just curious, do you know if the gun is still functional?

I was told yes it will still shoot, I have yet to take it to the range and find out first hand

This one was made with the changes to the slide, frame and parts.

But with that said its an AWESOME piece of history and firearms history and please do not change it. If you want to mess with it...sell it to me.

No , it will stay in the family , sorry...
I dont want to mess it up in any shape, form or fashion.
With that I will just put it back in the safe as it is.

I`m not big into the 1911s, what changes are you speaking of?

They put the finger relief on the slide behind the trigger well. Shortened the hammer and extended to beavertail to help prevent trigger bite. Added an arched mainspring housing and a shorter trigger.

Yours still has the low profile sights and straight cocking serrations. It also looks like you have the shorter thumb safety on it.

All in all you have an awesome piece there and it looks GREAT!

The only thing I would do to that beautiful piece of history is stop the rust so it doesn't deteriorate any more.

I don't know how best to do that, but I would find someone who does.

I am completely jealous.
